I've been trying to get enom to lower their prices to something more competitive for .co.uk domains. With no success. They give me a very competitive price for .com, .net etc but .co.uk are just to much.

They charge a minimum of $5.99 per year for them, which is very expensive.

.co.uk domains cost all registrars £2.50 ($4.00) a year with a minimum of 2 years form Nominet UK (the UK domain registry).

Many UK registrars charge about £2.95 ($4.73) a year, which I am happy to pay for a quality service (see http://www.ukreg.com/). Some are far cheaper - http://www.123reg.co.uk/register.shtml who charge only £2.59 ($4.15) and oneandone who use them as a loss leader. Most also offer volume discounts.

After talking to a couple of the guys there the best response I can get from them is that they have to pay VAT (17.5%) on the £2.50 which is true, however they can claim this back.

All I am after is for them to give me a price close to UKreg so that I can offer my customers a reasonably competitive price. I want to keep all my domains with the same supplier so that I can offer a full service for all domains.

If you agree with me and think they should lower the prices please email info@enom.com

More low cost .co.uk domain suppliers.
http://low-cost-design.co.uk/ £3.49 a year
http://www.cheapdomainnames.net/ £2.74 a year

enom are not that bad, rember .com/.net/.org is a much bigger bussiness to them and as long as they keep them cheap people will love them. Enom prices on .co.uk are not to bad. To keep in line charge less and lower your profit margin.

But If I was to sell at the price I get them from enom I would be putting my prices up. Those prices I quoted from the other companies are the prices to the end user.

Enom cant claim back the VAT - they have to pay it. Its the same with Tucows who also have to pay the VAT. Only european VAT registered companies seem to be able to claim back the VAT Nominet charge. Unfortunatelly, international companies just have to swallow the overhead.

By the way .uk domain names can only be registered for 2 years at a time, your quoted prices did not consider this and you forgot to mention the total charge(with the included VAT).

It costs Enom £5.88 ($9.50) and they sell for $11.98 (£7.50), how much lower could they go realisticly?

In contrast UKReg charge £6.93 to the end-user, however they sell .uk as a loss leader to promote their hosting. Enom on the other hand relly on mass growth which will eventually run out.

They do have to pay it but any company or person who is not from Europe can claim it back.

In the smae way that I can claim the tax back for anything I purchase from the US.

Indeed, in theory. But the complexities involved in claiming back VAT from an international location on a regular basis make it impossible, Nominet make the VAT charge mandatory.

Yes i think its basically down to the logistics of the whole thing as well as tax. Nominet still use a PGP email system for many functions and is not the most automated system to work with.

You may also want to consider that Enom make no effort to tie the registrant into the terms and conditions of Nominet ( last time I looked) and could infact make the registration void. When a registrant buys a UK name the contract is with Nominet not Enom or any of their resellers.

I also seem to remember Enom had no facility to create hostnames ( nameservers) on UK domains.

Also note it is not Nominet that insists on the VAT charge this is C&E regulations. If you are in the UK you will be able to claim back the VAT charged to you from a UK supplier but will not be able to claim back the included charge with Enom.
