Okay, I am looking into getting some colocation space at a second datacenter. I already have space in Pheonix and now I'm looking into going with a place that has cheap bandwidth. Mainly, give my clients an option of premium bandwidth or cheaper bandwidth.

Well, the datacenter I am planning on going through uses primarily Yipes with a mix of Level3.

I have heard mixed stories about Yipes, so now I am asking you guys.

1. How reliable is Yipes?
2. Are the ping latencies good? (50ms or better)
3. How often does Yipes become congested?
4. Can Yipes support speeds of 1 Mbps to 10 Mbps with little lag?

Also, anything else you guys know of.

Thank you for your answers.

used to be good last time my friends used them.... dunno how they are nowadays, but level3 is OK. Why don't you run some traceroutes/pings to hosts that are currently using them...

I have been. I have heard some great things about Yipes, but at the same time some bad things.

If they mixes it with Level3, chances are the incoming is on level3 and most outgoing are routed onto Yipes.

The reason being is that Level3 is generally about 2 to 3 times Yipe's price.

To answer your original question, Yipes operate on Williams fiber and buy transit from them as well. IMO, they are about one step above Cogent.

Yeah, understood on the premium vs cheap notion. Mainly, I just need to know before I do anything. As I have said, I already have a place to colo at a premium datacenter, but I'm looking for a second place for clients who can't afford premium. This is why I'm looking. So once again, the info is appreciated.

To my rather limited knowledge, Yipes actually sells both Level 3 and Williams "Wiltel" bandwidth. Level 3 is very good, but Wiltel is just slightly above Cogent imho. Yipes charges significantly more for Level 3. If it's super cheap, it's probably mostly Wiltel in which case I'd stay far away. You might try asking them for a trace route site to help determine their particular setup.

WilTel is very good for its pricing. (speaking from experience)

I have rarely seen Yipes carry level3 in it. My assumption is that probably 90% of yipes customer are buying the Wiltel bw. If they could afford to pay more, why would they go for Yipes at the first place?

I pretty much think the whole idea of having Level3 is a marketing thing. So, be aware of it.

Do you think I'm correct?

WebReseller.net uses Yipes but you can see Level3 through traceroutes on their network. They use Genuity/Level3/Yipes, so that's not completely accurate. Although, the 'unmetered' fellows is mostly WilTel.

I know that awhile ago, there was alot of transit going over level3 -- however nowhere near 50%. I don't know how they are today.

It's mostly a marketing tool and a backup. IMHO.

I'm voting for the marketing tool.

Yipes has two levels of service - YipesNET and ColoNET...

YipesNET is a blend of two providers - typically Level(3) and WilTel. Previously it was Level(3) and Genuity (Level(3) purchased Genuity and is phasing out the Genuity network, so Yipes moved to WilTel). Prior to Genuity, it was Level(3) and UUNET in most markets. Some cities also had other providers at one time, including Qwest.

ColoNET is a single-homed solution typically on WilTel Communications.

Yes, the bandwidth used by the datacenter I'm looking at is a WiTel mix, so more info on the WiTel side.

I have been doing more speaking with various staff members at this datacenter, they all seem to know what they are doing, a credible group of people. None of them have had any complaints about the Yipes connections.

About a year ago in Miami, Yipes forgot to pay their electric bill and lost one of their POPs. A friend moved off of them after that so I haven't heard much since. :)

The server my web site is on peers through yipes on a 4 mbit pipe. Try a traceroute to 66.227.107.167. The server is in Chicago.

You might want to check again. Sometime over the past week or so, my webreseller traceroutes have changed from Yipes/Level3 to Yipes/Williams, adding twelve additional hops in the process.

<edit>
I should probably temper the above with the fact that the Yipes/Level3 connections have always been very, very good.

Yeah, I traced to jason's server, 23 hops from Tucson, AZ and 85 MS pings. I normally get 40 MS of better cross-nation pings if the server I'm pinging is on a good network.

Yipes did make a change in the last few days becuse of a few issues with Level 3, however, it's not everyone and it will go back to Level 3 shortly.

We have had yipes for over 2 years now, and aside from a recent issue, they have been great. They do not even remotely compare to cogent. I think read somehwere on this post they were like Cogent, but far from it. They have some of the best ping times I have ever seen, also, their price per mb is not cheap by any means.

Hopw this sheds some light on the original question

what is yipes pricing like?

webseller
07-29-2003, 12:14 AM
Well, I can not say our price, but, to come into a DC they do get over 200 /mb, I have heard some even pay close to $300.00... It's a game of how much your gonna buy from them.

But as mentioned, their ping times are great and their support is out of this world. There was a problem with some of their equipment about 6 months back and they had new equipment out to our location within 1 hour and this was 3:30 AM...
