We're redoing our order system (its currently a bit too unfriendly) so I decided to see how everyone else gathers the signup info, whether its all on one of two big pages, or broken up. And the one place we think is turning off customers on our current system have to scroll thru the TOS before they enter information.

The new one (at least at this stage) will go:

Page 1: Customer details, domain info, payment term
Page 2: Confirm info, choose payment method
Page 3: Payment Processor
Page 4: Thank you page

Is this roughly how most have theirs setup?

For your legal protection, it's probably not a good idea to eliminate TOS/AUP acceptance from your signup system. If you ever need to terminate a customer for a TOS violation, you will want to be able to show that they actually accepted the TOS.

We put our TOS into a read-only textarea box and require our online sign-ups to initial that they've read and accept the TOS before they get the signup form. That way, they don't have to scroll through and read it if they don't want to, and we think most people don't--but at least we have initials that say they did.

Of course, part of our TOS is that if you violate it we can terminate without a refund, so it's pretty important for us to be able to show that the user accepted the terms.

The TOS acceptance is still there, however instead of being a single, very very long page we now just have a section of page 1 that asks if they have read it and agreed to it, and provide a link to it there. Removing it would be a very bad idea I agree.

I have both a TOS link on my order page before they fill up the forms, on the thank you page and the activation email.
