View Full Version : I am moving ALL of my domains away from godaddy, they are ridiculous!!
Frosty 07-22-2003, 02:27 PM I just got a notice via email today from a godaddy rep saying godaddy is going to cancel and take all of my domains away from me within 5 days. All of my important business domains e.t.c. because my WHOIS info contains an "incorrect address".
WTF? I refuse to put my real address in the WHOIS for the entire world to see. What kind of petty bull$#@! is this? It is my own WHOIS, i will put whatever info there i choose.
I`m immediately moving all of my domains to another registrar who has better and more *important* issues to be concerned about whether the address i put in my own damn WHOIS is accurate or not. Give me a break
blue27 07-22-2003, 02:32 PM If you don't want to show your real address buy their private domain service.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Godaddy or their service.
Frosty 07-22-2003, 02:36 PM I`m not going to throw money out the window for that rubish.
It is my domains, it is my WHOIS info. The email contact for the domain is correct and valid. I find it rather ridiculous they have nothing better to do, they can`t find more petty issues to concern themselves with. They send me an unpleasant threat saying they are taking my domains away from me for this bull$#@%
As I said before, give me a break.
Also, i failed to mention, they`ve triple billed me for the same domain twice. Also billed me for a domain i don`t even own any longer.
Phrozen 07-22-2003, 02:36 PM You should also be aware that providing false WHOIS info is agaisnt the law.
amusive.com 07-22-2003, 02:37 PM It isn't illegal, but per regulations you need to supply valid contact information.
Frosty 07-22-2003, 02:38 PM Then i guess i belong in a prison
The domains do have a valid email address.
amusive.com 07-22-2003, 02:38 PM Did they offer you the ability to keep them if you update with correct details?
blue27 07-22-2003, 02:39 PM I guess your just not lucky Frosty. I've been using Godaddy for quite a while and never had a single issue. I don't even recall hearing any bad mention of them on this forum. Good luck using a false address with your new provider.
Frosty 07-22-2003, 02:42 PM Yes, they said i have 5 days.
I just realized that for my domains WHOIS where it asks for the first name i put "Web" and for last name i put "Host". Maybe that`s what`s got their panties up in a bunch.
I`ll change the first and last name, but that`s it. I think that is what their problem is.
Nevermind, i don`t think it`s because i used fake address. I think it`s just because the first and last name are so obviously fake. I`ll fix that and see if they can get over this life threatening issue.
Frosty,
All registrars can assume control over you domain for invalid contact information. It's part of the ICANN regulations, they require it for a number of reasons.
And, registrars are starting to crack down on invalid contact info.
secludo 07-22-2003, 02:45 PM According to ICANN you must provide correct and up-to-date WHOIS information. This is your fault.
Your next registrar may not be as anal as GoDaddy is being but it's against ICANN regulations to provide false WHOIS information with ANY registrar. According to ICANN providing false WHOIS information is grounds for domain cancellation.
If you don't want the "world" seeing your address, get a PO Box and use it instead.
Btw, how do you plan on getting GoDaddy to release/transfer the domains for you?

It isn't illegal, but per regulations you need to supply valid contact information. You're right, the bill I was thinking of hasn't been passed yet.
But Title III Section 303 of The ACCOPS Act states:Section 303 will address this problem by making it a federal offense to provide false contact information when registering a domain name. Section 303 makes it a Federal criminal offense to knowingly and with intent to defraud provide material and misleading false contact information to a domain name registrar, domain name registry, or other domain name registration authority in registering a domain name. The penalty is a fine, imprisonment for not more than 5 years, or both.
Frosty 07-22-2003, 02:46 PM Oh well, it`s ok. Just forget the whole thing. I`m 100% certain after i change the first and last name it will be fine since the current one is obviously false.
Unless i can convince them that "Web Host" is actually somebody`s real first and last name.
Do you think i stand a chance? :stickout:
secludo 07-22-2003, 02:48 PM Why don't you just provide correct information in every field and never have to worry? I'm sure you're not going to get a handful of stalkers because you put your correct address, what's the problem?
Frosty 07-22-2003, 02:51 PM I just called godaddy and spoke to the women who sent me the notice. I switched the first and last name in the WHOIS from "Web Host" to a real one and she said it`s just fine.
There is no problem, i`m simply not putting my real address in the WHOIS, period. The problem has been taken care of.
Now i have to find something else to complain about...
blue27 07-22-2003, 02:59 PM All is good.
Frosty 07-22-2003, 03:01 PM Yeah just nevermind me. Earlier i didn`t realize i placed "Web Host" as my name. That is obviously a fakey. I fixed it and have been medicated and am feeling "normal" again now. Rampage is over.
:)
davidb 07-22-2003, 03:24 PM frosty, wait tell you want to contact someone who screwed you over and you go to the whois info to get theirs and its all fake. I bet you will give a **** then
Frosty 07-22-2003, 03:27 PM I would simply do a chargeback even if i did have the convicts home street address.
I think part of it has to do with domain transfers and such. Also, it's how the global registry actually knows who registered the domain.
Not to mention, that it also is there so that if someone wants to send someone a cease and decist letter related to their domain/site, they have access to the contact information.
Frosty 07-22-2003, 03:31 PM Yeah just nevermind it. I had a real valid email contact for the domains.
The name i was using was obviously fake, but i fixed that up so everything is fine and dandy.
There is another chance - have you considered changing your real name to Web Host?
Frosty 07-22-2003, 03:56 PM Yes, i will change my name to "Web Host"and move to the north pole to live in an igloo out in the middle of no where.
Igloo`s don`t have addresses.
What do you think godaddy would have to say about that?

calvin 07-22-2003, 05:22 PM Does internic actually care if a real name is listed in the contact info? I've seen many contacts for domains listed as "Domain Administrator", "Host Master", and etc... Even Godaddy has their contact info listed as "Go Daddy Hostmaster". Personally, I don't see how they can make someone put in a real name if they don't do it themselves.
kohashi 07-22-2003, 05:44 PM companies aren't people. I think they can dish it off to a legitimate department of their business. maybe they just cycle through hostmasters a lot... who knows. I think this thread is garbage though, whining because you lied to them and they caught you.

I'd hate to see what she'd do if she lost control of her domain. ;)
Alex042 07-23-2003, 11:03 AM Use the privacy option and/or a PO Box?
My eWriters 07-23-2003, 11:04 AM I've done multiple searches with over 10 states in the U.S. and no one is named "Web Host" - sorry, I don't think they'll believe ya.
Does anyone know the link to the form where I can tell the icann about wrong whois information?
I recently sold a domain name to someone and that person started a dialer porn site there, but still uses my name in the whois.
thanks :)

Goldwing 07-25-2003, 03:18 PM Think I agree with most here, if I receive a signup from someone using a false name and address I would not entertain it

Moral of the story: always change the WHOIS info before handing the domain over.
