View Full Version : Big Hosts...Big Problems?

Hello everyone,

We all know the bigtime web hosts, but anytime I see any message in here about any of them it's bad!

How do they stay in business (maybe their funding hasn't run out yet :stickout ) I think maybe the reason why is poor tech support, when you have so many customers, it's hard to handle everyone's claims without hiring tons of support people in an already slumping internet economy.

I'm just pondering, maybe I'm crazy, but what are people's views on these hosts:

Interland
*****
Verio
HostPro

Let me know, they must be doing something right, anyone use these guys and are pleased with them?

I don't know, it's late, maybe this is a stupid post. I think I'll go sleep soon and read you responses tomarrow (if there are any, maybe this is just a stupid topic).

Thanks,

Not sure how many, just the ones I names above, they're some of the biggest I think. (But I could be totally wrong)

I have 100+ of hosting customer, but I don't have the support problem??

This is the problem of management or system.

I don't know if that last reply was sarcastic, I'm just asking a question, does anybody here have any good experieces with the above hosts? That's all, if you're just going to sit here and say "What's your definition of big", "I guess I'm just small" then foget it, have a mod delete the thread, I just asked a simple question.

Thanks,

I've used HostPro in the past. Although they don't have phone support, I was VERY pleased with them. And their support people are top-notch.

I am currently a HostPro customer and I'm happy with them.
I like their Unix support.
I had some problems, surely, but nothing tremendously important. Once - you can find my posts on WHT - the server load grew significantly, but the problem disappeared the same way it had appeared.
They're a bit costly, though, but they have great uptimes :)

They treat you professionally, not friendly. But I like that way, anyway, because it is very helpful. I mean, they won't tell you why they rebooted that server, unless you ask them specifically. But you can be sure they won't reboot it unless it is necessary (a few days ago my server was rebooted, I'm in a shared environment: it had been up for 83 days!)

Go with them! :D

The above is so true. Large hosts are well-greased marketing machines.

As in most service business the 20/80 ratio applies, 20% of your customers will consume 80% of your resources(bandwidth, cpu time, tech support time, etc). In the case of Interland for example, they just get rid (or try to blackmail into upgrades) the 20% of intense consumers and offer acceptable service to the other 80%. This way they can reduce substantially their resources/customer ratio and service a lot more customers with the same infrastructure. And having a good marketing machine in a high-growth industry they know they can easily replace the customers who leave.

Although unethical, it is not illegal and it works out nicely from a business perspective. These companies are devoting the bulk of their resources into accumulating high numbers of easily serviced customers while the industry is in a rapid-growth phase. When the market conditions change and growth slows down they will probably change strategies and will focus more on customer retention and development of new products to sell to existing customers and thus increase their income/customer.

These companies have a very solid business strategy and they just implement their business plan without pondering ethical dilemmas.

BTW, the vast majority of consumers do not change service providers easily..

I use a verio shared linux box....
The support is good anytime i needed it....
Theres a few options they dont offer like shell access, but i can live without it i guess....

No complaints about uptime ( altho mail seems to mess up now and again... just for a few minutes then it's fine)
Over all I am pleased,

they are expensive however...

We used to use Tabnet which was bought by Verio.
Tabnet's tech support was okay, their accounting stunk though.
But when they were bought by Verio, the tech support disappeared
and the accounting was even more screwed up. We gave them
several months to fix the problems, but it they never did.

We don't need support all that often, but when you need it is nice
to have it readily available.

Verio stays in business because their Japanese telco parent company NTT is keeping them alive with large cash infusions. They are projected to lose 1.3 billion dollars this fiscal year.

Verio and profitable should never be used in the same sentence, unless the word 'not' is in there somewhere.

We used to purchase transit from Verio, but they made a big mistake and offended our president. Oops!

Would you consider a host like Pair to be large? I used to use them and was always happy with their service. They are not as large as some of the others you mentioned, but they are hundreds of times the size of some of the smaller hosts I've seen.
