Hi Bob,

No offense but I think you'll find that it's not quite that simple...

Not only do people disagree as to who is a good or bad host, there's a whole load of grey in between. Then of course there's various individuals who have a axe to grind.

Bottom line no single post is ever going to replace the sheer amount of opinion (both good and bad) throughout this forum. If anyone wants to find out about a hosts reputation all they need to do is run a search and there it all is.

Just my 2 penneth worth.

There are Good Hosts and there are Bad Hosts and a whole lot who fit in somewhere in between.

There are fundamentally Good Hosts who occasionally slip up but try to make amends. Often the opinion varies depending on who you ask and their experience with the host in question.

If you search you will find hosts who seem hopeless like
*****, Tacid Host and more. There are hosts like
Ventures Online, OLM who generally have good records.

It is easy to spot the first category. A bit of effort will also reveal hosts who belong to the second category. The hosts who are in between take quite an effort to judge and also may be better or worse than what others say.

For example, some people have had less than satisfactory experiences with Alabanza but I for one have had an excellent experience with them for well over a year.

The hosts with whom I've had personal experiences.

a) OLM - excellent - no problems
b) Alabanza - excellent but high priced - no problems
c) Innerhost - very good - once they setup a MSSQL database on server x but sent me details as if on server y. Otherwise no problems whatsoever. bit pricey though.
d) Inetu - good performance but inadequate competency with Windows NT. had some billing/cancellation problems.
e)Ventures Online - with them just for a month - excellent though.
f) RackMy - with them for 20 days - excellent experience with them till date.

Be patient, search through WHT and also usenet etc.,
post queries to actual customers and make a judgement after proper analysis.

In conclusion, it is easier to spot the fundamentally bad ones but very difficult to rate all other hosts in an easy and graded manner.

Cheers,

Matra

Instead of listing the 'bad' hosts, wouldn't it be more helpful for people to list the hosts they've had postive experiences with and are satisfied with (and why)?

I'm not here to tell you how your thread should go, but this is my suggestion if your aim is to find a host.

That does make sense though. Why would you want a list of bad hosts, when you are going to stay away from them and never visit them? Like Chicken said, list of good hosts will help you much better. :stickout

Synergy, yes it would seem you are their only happy customer :-)

how about setting a performance monitoring program on your web site to check its uptime, maybe that will make you think differently !!

Xstrike, I have done that and below are the results since Jan 2001 when i signed up.

Jan - 88% (GRRRR)
Feb - 93%
March - 95%
April - 100%
May - 80% (GRRRR)
Jun - 95%
July - 98% so far

Sorry I cant disclose my site URL because it contains very private photos (no its not xxx) which I do not want to disclose to the public and it operates as a private game server for Quake 3 RocketArena.

Check out their DEDICATED server offers

Get Dedicated 1 and Dedicated 0 is free. so its
$199.99 a month for 200 GB (50 on server 0 and 150 on server 1). Can anyone beat that?

BTW if you're wondering why I dont hate them.... Its because I'm not paying for nething, Its my friend's clan server and I'm just playing matches on it. :D :D :D

Jan - 88% (GRRRR)
Feb - 93%
March - 95%
April - 100%
May - 80% (GRRRR)
Jun - 95%
July - 98% so far

Jan - 88% = 89.25 hours of downtime (3.7 days)
Feb - 93% = 47.04 hours of downtime (almost two days)
March - 95% = 37.2 hours of downtime
April - 100%
May - 80% = 148.8 hours of downtime (6.2 days!!)
Jun - 95% = 36 hours of downtime

Y'all can (and should!) double-check my arithmetic, but that report alone should be enough to keep any serious webmaster from signing up with them, especially considering the fact that April's 100% uptime appears to be an anomaly for them. Sorry, Synergy, but you just made our point for us. That much downtime is death for a business site, and many hobby sites as well.

I think it falls under the, 'Well, maybe not too bad (if you feel that way), but you can certainly find much better' catagory.

Well, for me ***** IS a liar.
They said on their page http://www.*****.com/?zone=products/shared_unix_hosting_specials, for the standard special they are using dual P III 850. But in fact, when I registered with them 2 months ago, what I got was less than P III 850.

Below is the result from $cat /proc/cpuinfo at their server

See that the bogo MIPS was just 547.23, and also they removed the model of the CPU (probably they are afraid people will know they trick them ?)

For comparison, this is the $cat /proc/cpuinfo from my computer at home (P III 800 EB, single processor)

> [phxby@irwanhadi phxby]$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
> processor : 0
> vendor_id : GenuineIntel

pat
> pse36 mmx fxsr sse
> bogomips : 1602.35

See that the bogomips is 3 times higher than the bogomips at ***** server ?

Now when you say that the service from ***** is good, check /proc/cpuinfo, /proc/pci, /proc/loadavg, and test the speed of a distributed.net client and compare it to the results at http://n0cgi.distributed.net/speed/query.cgi?cputype=all&arch=0&contest=rc5

If when before you test the distributed.net client the /proc/loadavg is 0.00, 0.00, 0.00, or anynumber below 1.00, 1.00, 1.00, and you get a very very low benchmark from distributed.net client, then the server they are promising to you is a fake one.

I find these monitoring services to be very misleading in their percentages. They do not track actual uptime. They track the percentage of times that their pings did not go through and depending on how often they do a check, different monitoring services can vary greatly from one to another.

Well I am a client since I pay part of the bills when my friend is low on his budget.

I got the percentages from from the IRC BOT. Not sure if its actual but whenever I want to play games. Its not down and im satisfied.. Thats all.... If it was a business it would be a bad choice.

Well, if you just use for games, and you don;t care if people promised you to give egg but they give you rock, that's fine though.
But I only honor a business which if they say A they will give A to me ;)

For normal hosting..... A company like ***** would not care about your lowly 19.95 or 199.99 for the server period. Most of their money are made from companies like American Airlines or something

When I went to their site, a window popped up that said:
"Tired of bad service from your current web host? Unexplained charges, or repeated downtime?

Etc...."

Thought that was funny as thats what I have heard about them. hehe, someone should hack it and add to it to say "We're the one's famous for it"

Any one can not say who is the bad host and who is the good host, but we can recommend.

Because everyone also have good comment and bad comment, they may suite others, but not suite you.

You must do some research yourself, at this forum or any other places

hahaha... sorry.. i thought that was funny. Actually a lot of their money is made from individual sites. That and overbilling.
