chilliboy 07-29-2001, 08:11 AM Hi,
Sorry for posting the above - from a search I see that these offers are already known about.:bawling:
SuperDon 07-29-2001, 08:24 AM Hi Chilliboy,
Have you gone with them?
chilliboy 07-29-2001, 10:24 AM Hi,
No - I'm really just doing a load of ground work. I had a look round their site and it seemed ok - forum for advice etc etc, The prices look brilliant - and I like the idea that they are managed servers as there is no way I could find my way around a box on my own. I'm just wondering what the support/connection and uptime are like - are they through VDI ??
I'm with HR at the moment through VDI and the connection seems very fast to the UK where I'm based.
thoughts on interserver.net ?
SuperDon 07-29-2001, 10:47 AM Hi,
I too am UK based and am on a reseller account. It seems like we ae in similar positions (not knowing a great deal about administering a linux box).
I was looking at interservers packages and agree they are very good, but am also looking at burst.net - they seem very good also and have had a good chat with one of there guys.
I am now seriously considering burst although this morning i said that about interserver!!
Interserver are based at VDI and burst have there own NOC.
Let me know how you get on in your search. What are you going to be doing with your server and what spec are you looking at?
Cheers.
chilliboy 07-29-2001, 01:42 PM Hi,
To be honest I don't think I'll be getting a dedicated server for atleast a couple of months - but I always like to do a lot of groundwork first as when I move I want to stay there - there's nothing worse than jumping in to early and regretting it.
In the meantime I'm about to upgrade to hostrockets new 'semi- dedicated' (from a virtual account). The semi-dedicated will have about 10-20 accounts on it for $65/month which gives 30GB bandwidth and 1GB storage (this should be fine for atleast a few months but eventually I'd like to do dedicated). I'm fairly happy with them there CP is one of the best and generally they are very helpful and if you have an urgent problem they deal with it very fast - several times I've had then fix mySQL table crashes within half an hour.
If I remain happy with them then I would like to think I may get a dedicated from them, however their prices are well away (no BW included) from some of the offers I've seen hear and even their top package does not have an SCSI harddrive which I believe a top end package should (or options should be there atleast).
I've kind of narrowed things down a bit but all seem to have there drawbacks:
VenturesOnline (http://www.venturesonline.com/Dedicated_Servers/dedicated_servers.html) - Fairly well priced packages but nowhere near the 'offers' that have been recently posted by a few others. Question over support as I believe its not 24/7 (even worse if your in uk) and its cost $$$ if you text and your wrong about the problem. Hosted at Verio - don't know what they are like to UK.
Interserver.net - packages look brilliant + the fact they are managed means that you are not going to get stung for $$ every time their is a problem - I also like the fact they have a forum. VDI so very quick to uk. Question over support - I've heard supports good but usually takes a day to get something done - thats no good in an emergency I want it looked at 1 hour max. Also a few people have mentioned unresonable 'downtime'.
Hostrocket.com (http://www.hostrocket.com/v2/body_dedicated.html) - I've experienced good support and uptime - every time I've had a real emergency its been fixed in less than 1 hour - this has also included work correcting mySQL tables which I doubt may hosts would do - 24/7 support. Problems - the dedicated packages look to be overpriced - especially when compared to someone like Interserver.net - no SCSI on any packages. Also I've never heard from anyone with a dedicated server at HR - I'd like to hear if there is anyone out there. Maybe they would do a 'match' deal where they matched another VDI hosts offer ? Dunno?
Pegasus (http://www.pwebtech.com/dedicatedservers.html) - These guys appear to be recommended highest by people hear (and elsewhere). Also very fast connection. The 'offer package' they posted hear looked very good but the I would be looking for something of slightly higher spec than that. When you look at the prices of packages on their site they are nothing special 'cost wise'. Downside - they don't have a support forum - I've found this extreamly useful at HR asking questions of other members often save you having to ask support (I don't know why all hosts don't have forums - great for ironing out common problems and getting help - just a hint if they read this! ).
- PS your order and customise buttons don't work - this sort of think really does put people off. People often still do go buy first impressions!
affordablecolo.com (http://www.affordablecolo.com) (or whoever they are) Look at the offers in this THREAD (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=16348) These offers look outstanding - however there website looks to be a total nightmare - there broken links all over the place - I couldn't get any info on servers etc so this just leaves an immediate bad impression - I've they can't do a simple website themselves ....... Maybe its a new site or the companies been renamed or something but I did a search on these forums and could find one thread on them. If anyone knows who they are or used to be and anyone can give further info (recommend/don't recommend etc etc) then I'd be interested to hear - their website would ring alarm bells from a thousand miles away (sever hint if anyone from there reads this!!) - I would touch them after seeing that no matter how good there offers are - unless they have a good reason why its so poor.
Anyway - greatful if people out there could comment on the above.
cbaker17 07-29-2001, 01:54 PM Chili Boy im in charge of operations for web works, affordablecolo.com is our site, ive looked over our site and cant find any borken links what so ever, could you please point them out to me, in addition ive recvd nothing but praise on our design for this site, what do you dislike about it,
anyone else have opinions on the site design of affordablecolo.com
sorry if im taking this thread off course but chiliboy was quite hard on the site and i just cant seem to find any problems with it.
In addition chiliboy should you need to find out about our service and reliability you can do a search fro dtwebworks with the search function, youll find tons and tons of satisfied customers (dtwebworks is another one of our sites although now not really in use)
oh and the only link that doesnt take you to content is the dedicated server page and you will see that there is a nice looking message on that page saying its under construction, the reason why is because were taking every single prouct and service we offer and breaking it into its own website.

chilliboy 07-29-2001, 02:30 PM Hi,
Don't take it personally - the site just gave me that impression.
dtwebworks.com (http://www.dtwebworks.com/) - nice looking site - works fine.
affordablecolo.com (http://www.affordablecolo.com) : -
Front Page:
- top link to 'dedicated servers' goes to under construction page.
- link to Web Works - foes to under construction.
Click link to 'About US' - then click link to 'dedicated servers' : -
Short details of 3 packages appear - non of the links marked 'click for more info' work.
Down at the bottom of the page - 6 navigation links go to 'D drive' - all result in error pages.
To be honest I didn't look any further as this just really put me off. If people hear recommend you then fine - but I would really get the site sorted. I don't know what anyone else here thinks but if I just stumbled across you site looking for a dedicated and the link on the front page didn't even work (not to mention the other links) then I would give it a second glance. I still never managed to find a link giving any server details.
If your a good host then I'm sure others here will put me right - but I would I get that site sorted straight away.
cbaker17 07-29-2001, 02:33 PM I wasnt offended but just confused, it appears the about us page has links back to the old testing version of the site when we were designing it. Ill fix that about us page asap although you shouldnt see any of these problems anywhere else on the site, its isolated to the about us page.
chilliboy 07-29-2001, 02:52 PM Hi,
But I still can't find any info on your server spec's (under construction page). Should I be looking on the dtwebworks site ?? I'm now confused. Also there are no prices (and not much info) on the dtwebworks site under dedicated
cbaker17 07-29-2001, 04:18 PM The affordablecolo.com is just what its for colocation only, thats why there is no pricing, we are designing a site just for dedicated servers, but of course its under construction, if you want to let me know what your looking for i can quote you a price.
chilliboy 07-29-2001, 05:43 PM Cheers - as above it won't be for atleast a few months - just doing some ground work.
acetate 07-29-2001, 06:06 PM I've heard supports good but usually takes a day to get something done - thats no good in an emergency I want it looked at 1 hour max. Also a few people have mentioned unresonable 'downtime'.
Well.. Mike from interserver gave me his direct cell fone just in case my server goes down. They usually resolve it in less than an hour. So.. I would say interserver all the way..
=)
Ericd 07-29-2001, 06:09 PM Yes, Mike seems like a pretty good guy :)
chilliboy 07-30-2001, 04:01 AM Well.. Mike from interserver gave me his direct cell fone just in case my server goes down. They usually resolve it in less than an hour. So.. I would say interserver all the way..
That sounds good - but how fast is support in general - although hostrocket have been getting a mixed press recently I must say that you usually get feedback in a couple of hour - less in an emergency situation.
I do like the packages at interserver, plus the fact they are 'managed' and the forum - but I've seen several posts about dedicateds being down on a reg basis for days at a time - worrying.
Anyone give me some feedback on what I said about VO - also are they open to negotiation on their packages?
In general do companies offer to 'match' quotes for offers given by competitors for similar packages - or does it not work like that ?
Dylan 07-30-2001, 11:15 PM chilliboy, I've been with dtwebworks since the beginning of the year and :D all the way.
You'll be impressed with their network and outstanding support.
I'm surprised, chilliboy - 76 posts - and, oh... nevermind.
