View Full Version : A lot of posts = Trustworthy Hosts?
Serious Sam 07-20-2003, 04:18 AM I've been posting here regulary, and learning a lot. I've noticed a lot of people tend to associate those with higher post counts (500 and above, usually) as being more knowledgable, and my willace; trustworthy.
I recently requested some hosting, and I recieved numerous offers.
However I only looked into the offers by members who had hundreds of posts, believing since they are veterans here, they have to be trustworthy and if they were to scam me they would have quite a reputation to be ruined. Am I wrong to believe so?
akashik 07-20-2003, 04:27 AM In part, though it would be worth reading a cross section of their posts as well to see what they're actually saying.
I think most of the long term posters (how long they've been here) will know the time put in doesn't equal anywhere near the amount of new customers to warrant the effort - if that's why they come here, unless they're offering service for next to nothing.
The flip-side to that is, bottom feeders will for the most part never make it past their first year of business anyway, so will drift away.
Knowledge isn't directly relevant to post counts though, or even length of time here - again that'll be a matter of checking their posting history.
But I'm sure anyone who's been here for a while will know what happens when people are found not doing the right thing. Once there's some blood in the water on this forum, the sharks are pretty quick to start feeding :)
Serious Sam 07-20-2003, 04:38 AM Yes the *'s will matyr them.
hostlab 07-20-2003, 05:33 AM I agree, alot of replys are to requests, and alot is just chit chat. Some people probably post here maybe at least 10 times a day.
Add that up over a year, it will appear like alot.
But when you think about it, a year isn't a long time to have been in the hosting business, is it?
Laura4u 07-20-2003, 06:53 AM my experience has told me banned hosts are the best!
Techark 07-20-2003, 08:23 AM No, but it does give you an indication that if a host can come here day after day and stand the scrutiny of WHT after a period of time they are legit.
As akashik said do a search not only on he company but also the user name. Read some of their post and thoughts. You might find a very reputable host but they may not have a personality you feel you can get along with. You can also get a feel for their experience level and knowledge.
Having a high post count does mean by any chance they are a great host I think Timmahhhh a big scammer had a few thousand post before he was finally banned. And there are one or two others I can think of also. Like anything else you still have to do your research.
Sad our industry has come to that, but it has.

I suppose your host is banned
Pipson
bobcares 07-20-2003, 09:02 AM It is not the number of posts that count.
I was at one time addicted to posting.
Now I am more addicted to reading what others think. I am sure there are many others who are like me, read a lot to know more about the industry.. :)
So in the end you decision should be
1) On long they have been discussed on
2) Those who praise , how known are they.
3) How do they treat competition.
4) How do they treat their customers on public forums like WHT.
5) How well do they behave and what is their knowledge level.
6) Besides all these point, make sure you study every aspect of the provider before selecting the right one.
Selecting the right provider is a very major decision one makes..
Have a nice day
Regards
Amar

you said it :) been with them for over a month now
NickRac 07-20-2003, 09:19 AM try to look at not only post counts but time since registration and what the hosts actually talk about...on top of that do a search before hand of their company on these boards to see what users think.
Perfecthost 07-20-2003, 09:25 AM Also, take a look at when they registered. Some have been around for a period of years. They read much here, but don't post much.
anon-e-mouse 07-20-2003, 09:45 AM Some people have been members here for quite a while and only just started hosting, so don't look at their time on this board as an indication of reliability. Do a search for their first 100, 1000 posts and see if they were actually hosts when they joined.

????
Here is a typical example for a newbie... :topic:
akashik 07-20-2003, 09:53 AM Even better.. Check the nameservers of that domain :D
code_renegade 07-20-2003, 10:35 AM Some hosts have been in business for several years but only recently joined WHT, so their low post count might not be reflective of their trustworthiness/reliability. It's always best to do research on ALL those who answer your request, especially those that offer too much for too little.
Mark_TVI 07-20-2003, 10:45 AM I've looked in the Requests forums and saw people I didn't recognize with a lot of posts in there. I assume I don't recognize them because the only place they post is where I don't and that is in the requests forums. That doesn't mean they are necessarily good or bad hosts, it just means they are only posting in the requests forums....;)
Longevity is more important then post count IMO....
anon-e-mouse 07-20-2003, 10:48 AM I think it means there are more wannabe hosts joining daily, that is why you don't recognise them :)
Aussie Bob 07-20-2003, 10:49 AM There's something said for someone who has survived WHT for a few years and has a good size business too. Tough place around here sometimes. Many hosts have been sent to bed with no supper, around these here parts. :D
CrazyTech 07-20-2003, 11:01 AM I agree, but if the user has a huge amount of posts and they have been around for a while and appear helpful and knowledgable when you check out their posts then that is a good sign. WHT is pretty strict on rules, which is good. If a hosts breaks these rules then I would be worried about my server getting blacklisted or other more serious problems arising. WHT is a good place to get an idea of how a host is, however still doing your research on them is a good idea.

Many hosts have been sent to bed with no supper, around these here parts. You forgot to mention the public floggings.....:D
2Grumpy 07-20-2003, 11:40 AM Well I guess it could be an indicator but if I remember right didn't Timmah's original account have like 2600 posts? So as with anything it's not a hard and fast rule for sure.
And what is the hosting company has been around for 2 years and just registered on WHT? Doesn't seem right to label people that way, yannow? :)
Martie 07-20-2003, 12:05 PM A lot of posts = Trustworthy Hosts?
My answer would be NO!
As with anything, do the research. If I recall there have been those flava of the month hosts around here at WHT and without checking Im pretty certain there have been quite a few of them with high post counts!
Ive been a member myself since 2000, and my profile:
shows (1.24 posts per day)
which compared to some would not be alot. We dont advertise here regularly, and we dont gain clients here either.
Whats that old saying? Its not quanity, but quality that counts?
Laura4u 07-20-2003, 12:11 PM host with a lot of posts = hosts with a lot of spare time
I'm not implying anything here before I start a controversy :)

Ya think they smack us around enough they would stop and quit... but no, they just keep on beating LOL
at the end we have still all won.

Oh that was uncalled for LOL
A post count is no more than a number. It's what they've posted that should help you, not how much they've posted... alex (with a low post count ;))
CrazyTech 07-20-2003, 02:26 PM Well another indication about a host with alot of posts is that it means they are obviously online alot. I browse this site personally in my spare time. I wouldn't recommend using posts on WHT as any sort of a judgement tool for buying from a host. I hope that I did not sound that way in my previous post. Having alot of posts and still being here is a good sign, but as with everything else there are plenty of exceptions. The best thing to do is check out the actual feedback and client stories of the host, not how many times they have posted on WHT.

CrazyTech 07-20-2003, 02:31 PM Well maybe it is good if you have spare time ;) that means you aren't too busy with problems arising with your server(s) ;) It could work both ways.
SoftWareRevue 07-20-2003, 02:36 PM Oh. Yeh. That's it. :agree:
VNPIXEL 07-20-2003, 02:49 PM WHT should go back with old policy. DON"T count post in ADS forum. :)
CrazyTech 07-20-2003, 02:50 PM I do agree with that one. Any posts in the ads forum shouldn't be counted because they really aren't helpful posts, usually they advertise something or are to buy something.
I will agree that there is no 100% direct correlation between # of posts and the quaity of host. We've certainly seen exceptions to the rule. However, if a host has some longevity here, as well as a decent # of posts, it provides you an excellent opportunity to take the time to read through a lot of them.
You'd be surprised how much you learn about a person/business by reading posts made over a stretch of time. As well, if they're active members, there's a better chance you can do an effective search for their company name and read what others think of them.
Aside from the many other benefits, being an active community member affords a host the chance to establish credibility and reputation (or lack thereof...). But it's up to you to scrutinize their posts and make up your own mind...

CrazyTech 07-20-2003, 04:34 PM Well take myself, I've been here less than 4 months, yet I have 600 posts already. It is safe to say about 100-200 are from the advertising forums. Too the new user who doesn't do much research, it would appear that I have been here for a while.
