View Full Version : Redhat 6.2 vs 7.1

When looking for a dedicated server, why would someone choose Redhat 6.2 over the latest 7.1? I have noticed that several companies offer both. Not sure I understand why anyone would use the older 6.2.

Anyone have any comments?

Thanks,
Scott

This is easy... RH 6.2 has been around a lot longer. It is very stable and very secure (as long as your host takes to the time to secure it). RH 7.1 is new, has a totally new kernel which is unproven and installs out of the box with better security.

I would go with an updated secure RH 6.2

Aloha
another thought
I am not a unix hack but has a friend who is one
asked him the same thign as a while back he was using 6.2 but now he says 7.1
it has been out long enough is stable and has good patches
6.2 has so many kidie scripts etc.... for it that you might get it hacked quicker than 7.1 which you can beat most people to the punch of applying a patch

so I would say 7.1
but a poorly secured sys is a poorly secured sys

Keep in mind alot of newer hardware is not supported by Red Hat 6.2.

This is true but a provider would not be offering 6.2 if the hardware did not match.

well as stated... 6.2 isn't as new and so atleast in theory would be more secure. In reality it really doesn't matter.

We run 6.2 with all the latest patches and it runs just dandy. ;) We'll continue to run 6.2 probabbly forever unless we find we need some functionality of a newer version.

course some say 6.2 doesn't support the newest hardware but when you're talking about webhosting... it'll support what you need to run a server! cpu, ram, harddrive (ide and scsi), and most nics :D

RedHat 6.2 is the version we use right now. The reason why I picked 6.2 over the new 7.1 was more software support 6.2 than the new version. We have all the latest patches and we've been happy with it. Until today, I don't see a reason why we need to upgrade them to the newer version.

Even some of our Sun Boxes are still using SunOS 5.6 .. which is apparently still the industry standard right now.

So if pick a version that you know it'll be supported by all softwares you gonna use.

6.2 has a REMOTE named root exploit so if you use it patch it before it is connected to the internet.

Actually is not just 6.2 .. the exploit is attacking certain version of bind. All you have to do is upgrade your bind to the newer version. Bind 9 is awesome .. a lot better than bind 8

I agree with multipleimage, why upgrade to RH 7.x if you're confortable with 6.2
If you regularly update the patches, rpms, and kernel .. you don't really need to upgrade to 7.x

7.1: better SMP support

You can get the 2.4 kernel installed into previous versions of RH if you know what you are doing. Our host installs 6.2 + 2.4 kernel and it seems to work out for the best.
