I like the options that you get at fasthost and donhost but everyone here doesn't seem too rate them that much,

Could anyone give me an alternative to the 2, im UK based but thats not that important if there not.

Some people say unlimited spce/bandwidth what do they really mean in GB

I do freelance webdesign and i need a place to put sites that i do, as well as my own personal sites.

What hosting do/would you use for this kind of thing.

Thanks

That's the problem- you don't really know (although information has been posted about limits of at least fasthosts). This question is the generic question asked many time before. I suggest you read through at least two pages of this forum to see what others have suggested before.

I agree with Chicken, try doing a search on this board and you will find adequate info on what you want to know.

i have looked, but most people say they are now going co-lo and thats too expensive for me. :(

I just want to know a decent alternative to fasthost and donhost who have very similar features

Thanks

Well, apart from the obvious "dont go with fasthosts" warning, all I can say is give donhost a try.

If, after 30 days you dont like the service, you can get your money back (check T&Cs first)

Im a reseller for donhost and have, so far, enjoyed excellent uptime, but to be on the safe side, i've got www.netwhistle.com pinging the servers every half hour!! :)

Donhost are not as bad as they're made out to be, give them a try.

I suggest you speak to brendon from Freepagehosting.com.
I dont think he will agree, was given 1month to either get a dedicated with donhost or make "other arangement"
He has 500Accounts (alot free ones) like domain parking and pointing.
Using about 10GB bandwidth a month.

The thing is, Craig, is that a reseller account is designed for the owner to make some cold hard cash.

Giving away accounts is not the right way to use a reseller account.

IF a reseller was selling accounts for money, and had 500 users, a dedicated server would be the obvious and affordable choice.

A reseller account is a stepping stone to bigger things, such as dedicated servers, its not meant to be a solution for major hosting companies.

ha.. We have 756 clients now and we still resell for VO and Hostgo. (They are both great companies)
I love the idea of a reseller plan.
I am not a tech guy, but I like marketing my service.
I don't think we will get a dedicated server, so I am sure a reseller account is NOT a stepping stone for us :D

Sorry, but a quick look around the 'Net will show too many instances of "All accounts now reseller enabled" or "Bring 5 accounts in 30 days and your reseller setup fee is waived", etc. to support your statements. Three years ago becoming a reseller still had severe, expensive guidelines but now reseller accounts are purposely made attractive to the hobbyist to make money for the IPP. They don't care if a reseller loses money (and rightly so), so why should they care what a reseller does with his space as long as it conforms to the criteria they set up?

I don't know what Freepagehosting.com does, but I'll bet he makes his "cold hard cash" in some other fashion, be it banner ads, forced subscription to a newsletter, or maybe he just sells all his addresses to spammers.

I'm not trolling, I don't know any of the parties involved, I just know that I have seen a change in the trend of what defines a reseller over the eight years I have been on the Internet.

In support of your statements, I'm sure donhost or whomever just invoked the standard "We have the right to make you conform to our rules unless we discovered we made a mistake. We will then change our rules to fix the mistake, and you have no say in this":stickout

I have a hard time disagreeing with any one who knws the proper use the tilde when signing.:D

I had a similar situation, I develop websites for clients and friends in my spare time and needed somewhere to host them.

At around £30 + per month for each site hosted on virtual plans, once I had about 5 it was working out far too expensive.

However I needed Windows 2000 hosting with SQL Server. Fasthosts seemed ideal however their reputation doesn't appear to be worth much here.

I ended up going with wwwecui.com and got a dedicated server for what works out at around £200 per month - that's with live stats, SQL Server database, iMail Mail Server, 512MB RAM and so on.

Of the £200 per month I have to pay, I take back about £80 per month from friends whose sites I developed and are hosted there. I currently foot the bill for the rest, but a couple more sites and it'll break even compared to more virtual hosting plans.

I did not, and do not have any intention of becoming a hosting company and offering it as a service - it's just somewhere to put the sites I do. At that price depending on how many you have, it might be worth thinking about.
