View Full Version : 3-month review of FDC
SkullOne 07-17-2003, 06:31 PM Ive been with FDC for around 3 months now, and the level of service is quickly dropping.
Im using it mainly for a personal server, where uptime and availability take second seat to price.
But when my server is reboot my idiot FDC techs without notifying me first, and having it come back up with disk problems, and having to verify my database for hours on end, Im getting really fed up with it.
The first time my system was hard-rebooted, the tech said he upgraded the memory on the wrong computer, but I got to keep the memory, but having double the memory doesnt mean anything when they reboot the box randomly.
And its not power problems, because I get a notice from console about a local reboot. I dont know what kind of excuse Ill get for this latest incident, maybe someone tripped on the keyboard to reboot it?
Really sorry service lately! I cant even rely on it for basic e-mail anymore!
Potsie 07-17-2003, 06:42 PM FWIW: Mine suffered the same fate today. Fortunately it's just a file mirror, but it's still frustrating.
alapo 07-17-2003, 06:43 PM Maybe a UPS failure?
wubwob 07-17-2003, 06:58 PM UPS? I doubt they have UPS.
Same on one of the machine i'm managing for a friend. but i'm unfortunate, since it won't come up for me and they keep reinstalling the OS.
BiGWill 07-17-2003, 09:43 PM Same here... first time my friend ended up getting a fresh OS install, and just today the box was suddenly down, and came back up with an image from may?!
very, very strange...
Mark_TVI 07-17-2003, 09:48 PM There is another thread in the Main forum about an FDC server being down. Apparently the claims are that it is a power related outage.
DD-SNC 07-17-2003, 11:39 PM Did you know you can lock the console terminals? That could help to avert dumb techs.
propcgamer 07-18-2003, 12:07 AM wow thats pretty bad that they did a hard reboot! thats dumb on their part.
but free ram is good, as long as the server isnt completely broken
deltawolf 07-18-2003, 01:02 AM keep hard booting and it will be broken. A band of FDC activists should take over the datacenter and make service good again ;)

sounds like a plan to me:D
can we run and scream while doing this, just adds to the fun:stickout:
deltawolf 07-18-2003, 01:30 AM sure, i bet we'll find some beer and vodka and stuff hidden in some fake servers with a coolers inside instead of a computer

im sorry, good? when was it good? (if you really believe it was/is good, i have a pot of gold under a rainbow id love to sell ya).
just because someone has alot of cash to spend & gets a setup in a good building doesnt mean its good.
service has been shot below 0, since the very start. not to mention packetloss & such of that nature. just support alone makes you want to gag.
but hey, money over reliability
neonlexx 07-18-2003, 01:16 PM This is what FDC should tell their customers.....
"Dear customers, I'd like to explain the outages that we experienced today...you see me and the monkey that we bought from zoo to do our network engineering were in the "datacenter" (It's really just a walk-in closet) having a few beers, when all of a sudden the monkey went nuts and spilled his beer all over our cisco gear. I started searching ebay right away for replacements, and when I finally found a local one, I kindly carded it and replaced the equipment. The monkey has been punished for his mistake, no banana's for him, for a week. I appologize and would like to gurantee that this won't happen again until atleast tomorrow."

Funny, kinda mean but funny.
the truth hurts though :(.
neonlexx 07-18-2003, 08:17 PM My intention was not for it to sound mean, but seriously. I am tired of seeing FDC is down posts, gosh....just get out of the business. I never hear anything good about them. They should sell their clientel to rackshack, atleast customers would be better taken care of and this is coming from someone who doesn't really care for rackshack either.

PohChye 07-18-2003, 10:20 PM I'm a reseller of my friend who is using FDC's server. The memory issue happened to me once, some 1.5 months ago. Well, i was as devastated as i can be. But the account of USD10 per month is incredibly attractive, for a 1GB HDD/20GB bandwith account, which lure me to stay on.
However, it's been having constant downtimes ranging within minutes to 2 hours. I've been probing my friend, the provider, and what i got was reboots.
But well, they're quite beaten down straight by RS now, for their $1 setup fee, and low priced dedicated servers bundled with panels.

I know you can lock the terminal, but if you ever need assistance and the terminal is locked, how could you get help?
And that still doesnt stop them from repeatedly pulling the power from the box and say "Oops, I did it again!"
music 07-19-2003, 11:12 AM If you do not like them LEAVE.
Tazzman 07-19-2003, 11:40 AM IWay back, I was one of FDC's first customers, when they were still Kingcomp. I left them because of various reasons, mainly beeing that I outgrew them.
I have now once again gotten myself one of their servers, just to play round with. Presales has been good. I asked for an extra IP a few hours after I got the server today and it was allocated within half an hour.
So far it is going well. I haven't been playing with the server yet, that will come later today, so I'll hold my opinion of that until a later time.
I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope I have more luck than the others in this thread.
