Can you do all thinks on NT that you can do on unix? like run scripts, upload zips etc? host4student 07-28-2001, 12:45 AM I think so, but for NT is little bit complicated than unix when you are using scripting. kunal 07-28-2001, 09:16 AM Well for programs, windows is a pain in the *** when it comes to perl, php... and linux is a pain in the ***when it comes to ASP :) so really.. it depends on what you want to do, and how you plan to implement it. Honu 07-28-2001, 04:48 PM Aloha as others have said if you are using Perl scripts a few have probs (mostly due to the / ) adn a few other glitches now ASP will allow you to develop in ASP what these perl scripts would do anyway. so usually not a need for it any more if you can get your own or do searches for free asp scripts. a note that a lot of asp scripts people want money for so there are more free scripts for unix than nt. Unix has PHP (I think a bit tougher to leanr than asp) as Kunal said ya might want to find out what ya want to do is this for yourself ? if yes what are you using to do webpages (Ultradev macromedia is killer with ASP) then win2k would be a choice you trying to do hosting (unix is the main flavor here and you will find more suport) if hosting choose unix fiorst then offer win2k/nt as a second matra 07-29-2001, 05:34 AM PHP is easy to learn initially but a bit tougher if you want to do more complicated stuff than just simple pages, searches etc. On the other hand it is fast robust and works the same way everytime. Nowadays even NT/2000 based sites also use it in increasing numbers. Generally windows based stuff seem faster/easier to develop initially but not as reliable/robust/fast as Unix/Linux based technologies. Only weak point as I see it is in databases. MySQL though cheap, fast and adequate for most tasks cannot match MSSQL/Oracle for some serious applications especially ecommerce/banking. Cheers Matra Honu 07-29-2001, 05:53 AM Aloha Matra has some very good points If you are a designer type first ASP might be better if using ultradev if you are more a unix programer type PHP would be a better way to go if you are starting out from scratch I would choose PHP I am not sure about the stable/robust/speed part to me it is arguing chevy ford thing every one can agree to disagree I think that a sound asp doc is better than a sloppy PHP doc and vice versa so beware choose the language that you are happy with and go from there if you are pure web based if leaning toward doing intranet dev and some other things that might be for large biz that use MS it can have its strong points to I must say though there might be some money to be made in developing for the new net platform for some companies with teh new portal server it is pretty cool again choose what you want and look down the line ;) either way you go ;) from a pure hosting stand point Unix would be the first server I would choose if you want to resell learn it then move to NT NT machines are far more expensive to setup and run because it is MS you will have more people try to hack you again a secure sys is a secure sys so get soem good books either way you go read a lot and best of luck |
