View Full Version : Thinking of starting a webhost.
NetXL 07-27-2001, 08:25 PM Hello everyone,
I'm based in Australia and i've been planning for a while on starting a webhost, with servers based in the US. Now i'm all ok with getting the dedicated server/s and stuff like that. But I want to know that i'll get a big enough clientbase to cover the servers costs.
I don't want to get everything up and running and after 5 months have 4-10 clients or something. Can anyone give any hints or tips or some reassurance?
Thankyou.
Andy.
(SH)Saeed 07-27-2001, 08:32 PM I think if you offer good support, be honest to your customers, treat every one of them as your first customer, then you'll have no problem in making it in this business. However, if you browse through this board, you will see that there is a lot of competition out there (some even with very low prices). Anyways, like any other business, if you do a good job and take care of your customers, then you have a good chance of making it.
Good luck.
NetXL 07-27-2001, 08:37 PM Yeah, offering good support was what I had in mind, I know what it's like to be treated like dirt by a webhost and i'd make sure i'd be nice and friendly. Price's can go very low, which annoys me because some of the bigger hosts now jack em down so low that littler ones can't really seem to compete.
kwimberl 07-27-2001, 08:57 PM I would suggest starting as a reseller and seeing how you do before you invest the big bucks in a dedicated server...

You need to sit down and type up a business plan. If you don't, you will fail. If you do, you will most likely succeed.
You can't just buy a server, hang a shingle (post a website) and expect to be in business.
Business is business is business is business.

That's only a small fraction of it. You need to have a solid business plan and work the numbers. You also need to take EVERYTHING into consideration (taxes, growth, profit/expense, etc.).
I can't stress it enough - WITHOUT A BUSINESS PLAN, YOU WILL FAIL!

edude 07-27-2001, 09:55 PM Theres no need for a business plan, all you do is hire a server, fill it up with clients and sit back :)
-Just Joking-
As affordablehost said, a business plan is definetly important.
AH-Tina 07-27-2001, 09:58 PM *thinking about taking over his clients when he fails*
That's right! No business plan needed. Buy a server (I hear ***** is good), sell unlimited EVERYTHING for as cheap as you can and you'll do fine! :D

(SH)Saeed 07-27-2001, 10:25 PM I knew I left forgot to mention something! :D
Oh well, it's 4:30am and I've slept only 2-3hs per night for the last week or so (no sleep last night)
I remember someone telling me.. "If you like to sleep at nights, this is not the business for you!"
edude 07-27-2001, 10:28 PM I definetly agree with that :)

Looking around I see:
2 half empty bottles of Mountain Dew ON my desk
3 empty bottles of Mountain Dew UNDER my desk
1 full bottle of Coke in my desk drawer
CAFFIENE IS THE KEY!

(SH)Saeed 07-27-2001, 10:36 PM The thing is, I have no problem staying awake when I'm busy. I just can't see the monitor after a while, it's like if my eyes are drawn towards eachother and they lose focus :eek2:
edude 07-27-2001, 10:36 PM :kaioken:
Agreed with that !
NetXL 07-27-2001, 10:53 PM Thanks for the help.
