Today I recieved 4 letters from a registar about some of my domain names. They want to "inform" me that they are going to expire and a courtsey I can send this order form back to them and they register it for another year.
I though that using the whois system like this is illegal? Is their any kind of action that I can take against this registar for sending me these letters?
I know that this topic was brought up a while back, but I could not find any information about what to do.
Thanks.

Likely the letters are from the "Domain Registry of XXXXXXXX" depending on what country you are in, we've lost quite a few registrations to them, even had a client not too long ago that had sent away a cheque for 4 domains and they didn't renew them, the client wasn't willing to fork out $ to us to renew them (Domains were just parked) so let them drop, not much that can be done about this in my experience.

just shred them. what I love is getting a notice that I need to renew a domain soon, even though it won't expire for over six months. whatever.

Verisign did this to me a year ago. I had a domain through godaddy and they sent me a letter in the mail saying that my domain would expire in a month when it was more like 6 months and said that if I didn't renew that my domain would be auctioned. Well in their letter they also listed 50 bucks instead of godaddys 8 bucks, called them and and godaddy told me it was a scam. Don't trust any of those companys, if your whois says different go with that.

Yes, just do "nothing" and you will be ok.
Weve had several complaints about it too (mostly droa.com)
but now several others send out a similar MIS-LEADING letters about domain expiration.
Everyone should know who, what, where, when and how to handle everything regarding their domain name.

If they include postage paid return envelopes, fill them up with scrap paper and send them back. :)

Its reminiscent of the old long distance phone companies doing "slamming"
There is a feature that registrars offer, you are entitled to it, called "registrar lock" which locks your domain preventing other registrars from doing registrar transfers. Believe it or not, theres not much keeping someone with the know how to transfer your domain.
Surprisingly few domains are in "registrar-lock" status :)
