OK, I need help (again, sorry). The situation is this:

I paid my host for a domain at $15.00 a year, which will not expire for another 6 months. I am now canceling my services with said host. When I did a whois on the domain name it is registered in the hosts name, not mine.

Since I paid for the domain is it mine? Should the host just transfer it over to my name? It is with godaddy.com and when I called them they said it was up to the host whether they wanted to keep it or transfer it over to me.

Thanks for any advice.

Well ask them to make you the contact for all the details. If they refuse it would seem they are holding your domain hostage. Then you just have to fight it out with them. If they do change the details to yours, you can pull it over to another registrar in your name. good luck.

I would try and stick with godaddy if I could. I hope you get the hosts to give you ownership of the domain....since you did pay for it.

You'll find that many hosts that offer free domain registration will either keep the domain registered to themselves, or very often their terms will state that you need to remain hosted for x amount of months before they will transfer ownership of the domain to you.

You need to take a look at your hosts F.A.Q or policies, it should state in there exactly what the terms are relating to who owns the domain.

Although there are many good hosts that will offer a domain with your hosting and register it in your name from day one, for future reference it's always best to keep the two seperate if you can, so if something happens to one, you don't loose control over the other.

If he paid the $15 specifically for the domain I would think it should not have those stipulations. I would suggest setting up an account and tell them you want it pushed to the account with "Your other domains" so you can easily manage them all together. :) Do this before you tell them you are parting ways.

Sorry, i should have read the post a little better, if you paid a specific amount for the domain itself, then yes it should be registered to you.
