View Full Version : I have questions re: Windows hosting.

After years of only hosting Linux machines - I want to start offering Windows hosting as well. Mainly because we're getting alot of requests for FP, ASP and CF.

Here's the thing - I don't know where to start. I've already decided that I'm probably going to go with pwebtech.com (excellent response time and helpfulness!)...but much more than that...I'm lost. :(

I'd like some sort of a control panel, but I'm finding out that there isn't anything like that for Windows (unless I go for the big bucks).

Any thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

Aloha

well you can use the built in interface windows has to manage the server but it will not let your end users control it very well.
also know that you may want to look into a 3rd party ftp program (some other threads on this in WHT)
also you will need a POP server to use on a win2k box.

I have worked with CF on unix box before and it is great so if you want CF ya might want to offer it on unix/linux boxes
that way they can have a great easy dynamic interface besides PHP
some say CF works better though on win2k so ya might want to stick with that.

Have a look at http://www.handyhosting.com for WIN2K servers, very reliable support team. Also has a control panel available. And if you decide to use them, come back and let us know how they are.

Dell's powerapp is a pretty good win2k cp :)

I'm actually doing some reselling for them right now (NT accounts - we have our own Linux boxes). They are very responsive and I've been extremely pleased so far.

According to CNet/Builder's latest reports (http://builder.cnet.com/webbuilding/0-7255-8-6615879-1.html?tag=st.bl.3880.pro_h.7255-8-6615879-1) CF 5.0 works phenomenally on a *nix box, so Tina, if you're intending to offer CF and you have some spare cash ($5000), then I would think this would be a fabulous option.

I'm also grabbing a copy of the Enterprise edition soon and will be testing it out at my University since we may be migrating to a CF platform sometime in the future....

Something tells me however that the $5000 is a bit too high for your budget, no? :D

Is the $5000 for unlimited uses (multiple machines)? If so, that isn't a bad deal at all.

I need to find someone who can implement all this for me...correctly...on some Linux machines. I've already run into stumbling blocks because I can't find anyone who wants to install FP/ASP on a *nix - and stand by it as being secure.

Anyone? Anyone? Anyone?

I believe so, but don't quote me on it. Someone else (Honu?) can probably explain the Enterprise pricing structure. (and I'd love to hear about it too)

Failing that, you could always e-mail Allaire directly and ask......

What?!? Are you suggesting that I actually leave this forum and do my own research???

Aloha
email Macromedia/Allaire to be safe

we ran it on a 5 node cluster 3 data servers and 2 app servers
we used cluster cats built in to it

we had the enterprise version we had to buy 2 seats as the 2 servers even though clustered together
so from what I remember it is per seat (I think this is correct term) there was also some hoopla going around about per cpu so if you use a dual machine it would be 2 lic but I think that did not stick
we had been with em from version 4
also we were a allaire partner so that helped on pricing and our main programmer was cf certified.
I was the layout and team lead (team of 4)
we used it on a Unix box and it was great no probs we coded everything in http://www.fusebox.org format also so if you are doing large scale applications ya might want to cehck it out
