Ok, just put aside that this domain is already built up & very popular with lots of hits.
But does that mean it is a good domain?
I found it rather long... & easy for typo error.
Just my 2 cents :D

It gets the point across. It's a place where you discuss web hosting. It fits.

To address the typo concern, I don't think there's much chance of typos. Most people in the web host industry will type the term "web hosting" so much it's automatic, ya know? It's completely natural and instant, sorta like your name or something. Not much chance for a typo. That only leaves "talk" to mess up.

Assuming they were both undeveloped, which do you think is better?

WebHostingTalk.com or HostingForums.com ?

HostingForums ... I'd want webhostingforums to go with it though if at all possible.

I only have HostingForums.com. WebHostingForums.com is already taken and HostingForum.com is for sale for $1,888 by BuyDomains.com

I think the main point though, is that the value (in this case) is established in the website and the traffic, not the domain name.

WHT ranks 717 with Alexa AND comes tops even when you type WHT :D

I actually agree with you. Along the lines of what you're saying, I offered to trade my domain NameCheaper.com to NameCheap (one of your clients I think) for a few domain credits and they had no interest. I registered it originally to make a directory of domain registrars but decided not to do it. I thought NameCheap might find the domain useful for maybe a promo, discounts, or wholesale page.

I remember your request actually. I think the main thing was that the name had no real value to them. It's only value would be if they used it for promos or dicsounts, as you said. In the interest of branding, I think (and I agree) that they wanted to keep the focus strictly on NameCheap.com. Secondly, if they did accept your offer, they'd have everyone purchasing names similar to namecheap.com.

I guess you have a point. Maybe I'll find the time to make it a registrar directory afterall...

Well....I'd be careful with that ;-) They have extremely good grounds for a lawsuit, especially since you offered to trade the name for credits.

If they ever felt you were competing with them, they'd could take the name away rather quickly plus whatever profits they felt you derived from use of the name.

I would just forget about the name. sorry :-)

A directory is hardly competing with their service. As far as I know they don't maintain any type of registrar directory. But, I appreciate the input.

Advertising their competitors is. You're free to do as you like. I won't mention it to them or anything, but I know they monitor this forum.

I don't think I would advertise their competitors (domain registration services) on such a directory. It would taint the idea that its a valuable impartial directory. I would have paid advertisements for other types of services and products though.

Playing with fire there greggish. I know for a fact Richard browses these forums and helps every NameCheap customer in need. I would do as Xemion said and forget the name. Developing it into anything related to domains could get you in trouble.

As for the value of webhostingtalk.com, I dont think much of it as a domain name alone. WHT.com would be much more valuable because it is shorter and more memorable in my opinion. WebHostingTalk.com is very simple but a bit long and three words. If I am looking to buy domains I anything above two is not a great idea in my opinion. As domains alone I think HostingForums.com and WebHostingTalk.com are about equal. Neither is much shorter or more memorable. HostTalk.com I could see having much more value as a domain alone. It is very short and too the point. That is just my opinion.

I'd much rather have www.whtalk.com than www.webhostingtalk.com (too long IMO).

It's faster to type, like www.cgtalk.com

webhostingtalk.com itself is not what we would call a good domain name. But because it has already gained its reputation (branded, kind of) and traffic, similar strings of words actually benefit from that.

I would love WHT.com, it would make things a lot easier.

It's also self explanatory. One could venture a guess about it, and maybe even presume that you can talk about webhosting here...
