You couldn't have posted this two days ago before I paid 4ws to upgrade the ram in my RaQ?

I'm sorely tempted. The RaQ's been pretty good to me but I'm severely pushing it's limits already and expecting some good growth in traffic.

Three questions:

1) The basic install (at $129 a month) comes without any kind of CP right? I'd be looking to host just one site on the machine and I've been a Unix programmer for about 12 years so I pretty much can handle the command line but a little help here and there is always nice.

2) What about installing extras like MySQL and tomcat?

3) If (when) I need a dedicated Db server, would you be able to provide second machine without a transfer allowance with a direct connection to the web server?

We can throw in webmin for you no prob, and compile apache with all the fixens.

2) What about installing extras like MySQL and tomcat?

Mysql free of charge tomcat with cpanel is free tomcat, with plesk, not possible, tomcat with standard apache installation fee of $75.

3) If (when) I need a dedicated Db server, would you be able to provide second machine without a transfer allowance with a direct connection to the web server?

Yes, for an additional $20 per server we can connect them, i would suggest getting a second eth0 in the first server in prepartion for it.

I agree with the other posters. This is an excellent offer and a great price. I am concerned that you may not be able to permanently offer the server at this price. Your web site indicates that a 700MHZ PIII with 128 megs RAM costs $225/month. This is the type of rate I would expect. Would these special low-priced servers ever increase to your regular rates. After my three-month contract is up, might I have to spend $250/month to keep the server?

jayglate
07-26-2001, 06:00 PM
That is an outdated part of our site, just haven't had time to update it, this price is guaranteed for the length of your contract and as long as you are with us.

Plus this is using level3/qwest bandwidth and not nac.

Alan - Vox
07-26-2001, 07:13 PM
how will the quality of the level3/qwest bandwidth compare with that you get from nac.net?

jayglate
07-26-2001, 07:38 PM
The bandwidth is of a different caliber. Level3/Qwest are "good" providers. But, nac is much better in terms of diversity, quality and support.

wow, I was just talking (a week ago) with Ed about some stoneage server for $100/m and $100 setup, and he never mentioned this
But I didn`t buy it, so basically this is a opportunity I want to grab!
Two questions:
How long will it last?
Does this mean you are not inhouse like on NAC?
Last month payed in advance as usual?

Thanks for the offer Jay!

This special was released by me today, this was NOT available nor did ed have any knowledge of this last week so blame ed.

We are in the same building as nac, our office is downstairs from NAC's noc. These servers are located in equinix's noc about 20min away form us. Speak with ed@pwebtech.com about the payment options.

Hello,
What is the exact hardware configuration of these servers. Motherboard etc, brands?
It looks like a great deal. Very strangely similar to serverhost's offer but the plesk PSA is what... 375 or something dollars cheaper :D
Whats the connectivity like aswell?

Thankyou in advance,

Hi,

really a great Offer.

Have some Questions about it:
- what is the max. RAM what you can install in the Server ?
- when I want to Upgrade Hardware later (more RAM, bigger or second HD, ...) will be there also only a 'one Time Fee' and will it be around the same Amount (+/- actuall Market Price) ?
- Can you also Install "WebMin" [ready configured for Apache (http://www.webmin.com/webmin/apache.html)] and when yes will this cost Extra ? //OK the Installation on the Server is no Problem (one Line at Telnet and it will install itself) but the Configuration on Apache is the Problem - I'm a Linux-Beginner and so I dont understand all in the Installationguide//
- can I say you how the PC-Name of the Server will be (Example: WhatIWant.WhatYouSay.com) ?
- Is Support via ICQ possible ? What for a TimeZone (GMT) are you/Support ?

Well, we are using

Intel CA810 or CA815 Motherboard
Intel 750Mhz retail boxed CPU's
Micron Ram
FULL Version of PSA we have a special deal with plesk

And the connectivity is excellent, with level3/qwest connectivity, with soon to add emergency nac failover.

- 512 is the max ram for this machine.
- 512 ram is the max, and upgrade i.e. second hd are still based on one-time setup costs.
- webmin is not a problem, we love it.
- yes name the pc anything you want.
- icq support is available, we are est std.

Hope this helps.

Is remote cold reboot supported?

jayglate

For a second backup HD it is $45 a month, tape backup is $100 a month.

Remote cold might be an option we will know more soon. Also there is 24/7 Live tech support.

I assume the upgrade to 80 gig is just a second 40 gig hard drive? If so, why would we need your back :D Could just mirror from one disk to the other with dump/load or dd.

Do you have a standard partitioning or is it up to us?

Thanks,

08-08-2001, 11:55 PM
Ok, A few points of business

Yes, we give your box 1 ip to start, you must justify to us that you, need more for us to issue you more. We will issue ips in blocks of 8.

We left equinix at 3:30am, tues night. All the boxes were ready to be configured for individual client needs. When we got in the next morning, all the boxes have been code-red scanned and hacked even before, we were able to perform a full lock down of the boxes which is our normal procedure. They were hacked at around 5:00am this morning, 2 hours after we put them live on the net.

I am posting this from equinix now, check the ip i am posting from.

All boxes have been reformated, and redone with a full lock down in place, before they go back on-net. This is the first time a box has been hacked so quickly, without anyone even knowing the ips.

Now the good now. We are leaving equinix in about 30 min. roughly midnight, we have already been here for about 5 hours, redoing the boxes. All clients will be up and running tomorrow/today the 9th of august. If you have any questions. please email ed@pwebtech.com as I will be busy working on getting these boxes up and running for your use and will not have alot of time to engage in conversation.

Thank you all for your patience and patrongage.

Also, we will be running another special on this soon.

Also being included with all your servers as well will be remote console and remote reboot abilites for an additional $50 one time fee. Which means you can reboot your boxes remotely from anywhere, and make sure they come up.

Code red will kill iis, but code red can scan networks, and report back to people system info.

it infects an IIS Server and from there scans networks for ips and servers.

JBIZ718

From Security Focus:

When Code Red surfaced in its first incarnation earlier this month, it infected enough machines to cause a measurable degradation in global Internet traffic.

When Code Red's internal timer went off, computers running vulnerable versions of Microsoft's Windows NT or Windows 2000 operating systems begin scanning the Internet for other hosts to infect.

Overall linux servers should not be infected at all, Linux servers should not be hacked and or compromised from the worm.

Lo m8

As Jason said, all servers are set up with 1 IP to start with, so u gotta ask him for more.

He puts in them in 8 IP block installments based on if u need them.

Like Ventures Online, u don't get all 32 at once - but you DO get them when u need them.

Thats a rather confusing statement. The words "additional" and "included" really clash here. Im hoping "included is" the word of the day, Im paying close to $600 with all the upgrades I got and I still dont have a server. Cant help but complain a little.

Jay what do you do to secure the server?

Do you check Advisories,Vulnerabilities,Patches?
Installing the best firewalls?
Upgrading software?
Who monitors the servers? If you truly monitor the servers then shouldn't you pull the plug when you detect hackers? Or do you wait untill most of the servers god hacked.

Cheaper offers ? Like where ? Unless you are refering to the RAQ's (which are no mach for these specs, not even remotely) you aren't gonna get a deal that's better than this one.

It is a bit disappointing.
I thought they said that if the order was placed last week, all would be done this week. Well, Friday is tomorrow (really, it is today, if you are where I am), and I am somewhat disappointed. Money was not the total issue here, I would have paid more. But the repuation for support, etc. was what attracted me.

I will wait another day and see before I have 2nd thoughts.

I meant the acsdatanet.com server for $49 with 40 GB included. But that one needs to clear up first in the other thread, there seem to be problems, at least one ex customer is saying so.

And I couldn't live with RAQ either. Already had a 4webspace server but didn't like the whole cobalt interface, slow as hell and limited.

Only reason why I cancelled mine was their "We are accepting orders now, and can have you up and running in no time." statement kinda implies setting up within 3-5 days - thats what I consider as "up and running in no time".

I ordered a server with another company on Tuesday/Wednesday this week and I spoke to the guy last night and apparently my server could be ready today :)

THAT's "up and running in no time" ;)

When a host runs a special like this that's bound to get a tremendous response I'd expect it to take a bit longer than usual to get the up and running. I also guess they'd go faster if they weren't taking calls every 5 minutes asking "Is it up yet?" :)

I'm planning on cancelling my server tomorrow, unless I will receive some explanation, or my server. If they won't refund your money, then do a charback, because you HAVE NOT received your service that was promised in the contract, many of us have not even heard anything, and it's been 11 days for me.

I understand if they might experience problems, but at least we should be notified of them. I only found out what was going on though this forum, but how about the people do not visit it?

The only reason I singed up, was because of so many good comments, but I guess I joined in a bad time.

Offer is good, but communication is definitely lacking.

I feel sorry for you guys.

I too moved to a new host a few days ago, and now, after their cc processing company wasn't able to bill my good international cc with which I bought so much things in the past, and after they did refuse a wire or me sending them the cc details by email, and after they admitted that several customers had problems with their payment processor, I had to open a paypal account. Now waiting for the paypal account to be confirmed to be able to pay them but guess what, meanwhile they closed my ftp account. LOL

Just so you know, hosting problems everyhwere. But I'm on the move again. I am not waiting too long anywhere, anymore.

Hi,

got just back Home and what did I had in My Inbox ? ..................... The Mail that My Server (Standart-Offer with 512 MByte RAM and WHM/CPanel) is ONLINE ! Great ...

So and now lets "test" the Support how long they need for a IP-Block (need it for NS and the first Domains on it) :D The first what I like is that I get a Tracking-ID for Support-Mail, so I know that they did get My Mail

Can't say at the Moment anything about the Server if OK or NOT then I'm very tired [its now Saturday at 01:10 AM (GMT +01:00) - was a very long Day ...]. Will give Feedback when I got IPs and have Setup Server - made a litte Test-LogIn in WHM and just see that the Setup look a littlebit different to the other WHM I have on other Server (other Provider), but it have the same Version !?!

Jason, please explain this comment? In your original offer, you said all these "special priced" servers were going to be co-lo'd @ the Equinix facility on a L3/QWEST backbone, is this still the case?

If not, I need to know now.

I emailed him 15 minutes ago. within 5 minutes of my emai, he brought the server down and sent me an email that cpanel is being installed now.... impressive response time Jason! :D

I am still waiting. I paid my money two weeks ago. No communications except when I initiated them. Was told last week it would be on Monday. Still no word.

Now I hear that the NOC has changed. This is not what was in the original offer. The Equinix NOC was what was offered, now we find that we are going to be put in some other NOC yet to be named.

This is all very disturbing.

I went with pwebtech because of their reputation first and this offer second. Everyday that goes by causes me to question my decision.

My offer to assign my contract is still open. The first to respond to my offer willing to take over the contract (pending pwebtech approval) and reimburse me for setup and first month lease (468.00) can have it.

hold on chaps

Think u are all making a mistake.

These dedicated servers that Jason (pwebtech) are offering are indeed at the Equinox NOC - nothing has changed.

What was getting confused was Eligha saying about buying the servers - if he can get them cheaper per month to which Jason replied that if he wanted to do that (it is known as co-location) then the server will have to do 1000gb of BW a month.

I think what Elijha was trying to say is if he takes over XXXX's contract will he get it cheaper?
The answer is no.

Soooo those who ordered a dedicated server for this offer WILL be based in Equinox's NOC.

Think that sums it up :)

Between trying to get the flood of servers up and talking 100 phone calls asking "wheres my server???"...They are probably overwhelmed.

Why doesn't everyone take a deep breathe and give Jason and the his guys a chance to get their heads above water.

Hello all

I purchase a special from PWebtech as well and I am in the process of making the "Network Info" pages for it. However I have no clue on Equinix's network connectivity. I visited equinix's website and there was nothing about their connectivity. I tried PWebtech support numerous times but never got a decent answer besides "We are connected to Level3/qwest OC192." (which is okay for the moment as I know they are quite busy setting up lots of boxes).

My webhost is going up soon but I haven't got a Network info page yet. Can someone help me out? I want to know what connection I will be offering my client!

E.g. 155mbps OC3 with Level3, OC192 with Qwest.

Is there a page on the web somewhere that's got a detailed explanation of EQUINIX's connectivity, look at these example "Network Info" pages below. I'm looking for something similar.
http://www.venturesonline.com/Network/network.html
http://www.linuxwebhost.net/network.html

Thanks for all your help! :)

Basically ARIN is the register for IPs and because there is not an unlimited supply of them they just won't give them out to anyone who asks without good reason. As a result anyone who requests ips must have a justification for them, it is not your host who is giving the problems its just they can't give them out without justification as per ARIN which is who they get them from. So basically if you pay for them or if they're free you still have to justify the request for them.
