View Full Version : Kind of about webhosting...

I just recently registered a domain name and bought a webhosting plan for a site I held on geocities... now, my geocities site is pretty popular among search engines (google, yahoo, netscape, aol, lycos...) for a variety of keywords related to my site.

Since I am changing urls from a geocities to a domain.net, is there a less painful way to alert the search engines that I will be moving from the url they have listed? I have already begun submitting the domain.net one but it is very painful and time-consuming. I will have a redirect, but for site stats purposes, i would only like to check one site rather than both...

thanks for the help... :D

if the visitors are automatically being redirected to your site then surely the stats will remain the same for both sites?

i wouldn't bother trying to tell yahoo/whoever about your changed URL as they will not update their records...

Since you're not hosting on geocities any longer, you just need to set a redirection page as to inform any visitors about change of URL (specify enough information to make them realise that), before they were being redirected.

In this manner, it won't quite be necessary for you to check the stats of the geocities "redirection page". The most i would do is maybe just to place a visible hit counter for a rough stats.

put the forwarding java in your geocities page, so your clients will forward to your new domin.net

and there is not need to upgrade yahoo, google, they upgrade their own record automatically....
