I want to buy new server at The Planet and not sure if I have to take Red Hat 9.0 or Red Hat 7.3?

Did anybody here have issues with Cpanel installed on Red Hat 9.0?

Thanks

there was few posts on cpanel forum regarding issues with 9.0, i guess it is not fully supported yet, so if it going to be a test server go for it, but pick 7.3 for a production box (7.3 EOL is 12.2003)

DedicatedNOW is only using RH9 now on their new dedicated servers so it must be stable.

do not go with redhat 9.0, it has frontpage issues+email related issues+not yet known issues. we roll backed one server to redhat 7.3 from redhat 9.0 due to various issues.

today, i read in whm post that frontpage is now supported for redhat 9.0 but i will suggest just wait for 1 more month until all issues are fixed.

I havnt used CPanel with Redhat 9 but Redhat 8 and 7.3 works 100% fine with CPanel

So i'd recommend you switching to RH8 or 7 :)

i think 8.0 is just a 7.4, i heard / read somewhere. I don't see why redhat wants to increase version number so fast where freebsd is going slow !!, may be its realted to there stock prices or something like that ?

Might as well just use 7.3 for redhat servers. 8.0 has an insecure kernel (as does 7.3), so if you're going to have to recompile the kernel (and you're one like me who does it from source), why not just go with the prooven one.

That and I find a few aspects of the install in 8.0 irritating (mind you, redhat thought through the 9.0 installer quite well, no longer needing 2 cd's for a vanilla install is a .... nice touch).

Are you sure about that?

The only problem I am aware of is PHP did not work on initial install with RH 9 and cPanel 7. You have to run /scripts/easyapache then uncheck downgrade to 4.3.2 of PHP

Any advantages to get 8 instead of 7.3?

Isn't EOL on RH 8 12.2003 as well?

I am in the same position, getting ready to install cPanel for the first time and wasn't sure what RH to use. I planned on 9 but after reading this who knows. I am tempted to use 7.3 but since EOL is 5 months away that turns me off.

most of the cpanel issues with redhat linux 9 have been fixed.

cpanel works great with rhat 9.0
currently running one live server with this configuration.

Only problem was trying to get bastille running on rh9, ended up using a different script though.

Got this in their site:

Red Hat Linux -- Red Hat's policy for Red Hat Linux distributions is to provide maintenance for at least 12 months. At certain times, Red Hat may extend errata maintenance for certain popular releases of the operating system. End of Life dates for errata maintenance for currently supported products are listed below:

Red Hat Linux 9 (Shrike) April 30, 2004
Red Hat Linux 8.0 (Psyche) December 31, 2003
Red Hat Linux 7.3 (Valhalla) December 31, 2003
Red Hat Linux 7.2 (Enigma) December 31, 2003
Red Hat Linux 7.1 (Seawolf) December 31, 2003

That really sucks - that is even worse than support from Microsoft on Windows.

Do you know how long Microsoft officially support their Windows releases, I think you'll be surprised.

I would be glad to switch to FreeBSD or even Debian. Problem is that I dont have time to learn those systems, espacially FreeBSD.

What about Debian? Is there any support expiration date for it? Is it faster/better then Red Hat?

Just noticed that Cpanel is under BETA development for Debian ...
