View Full Version : Virus Checker recommendation
WebSnail.net 07-25-2001, 08:13 PM Just a quick request for some kind of feedback on Windows virus checkers...
I'm currently running McAfee Clinic but given the grief it's given me ever since they changed over to the bl**dy Agent program I'm more or less at the point of switching to something more reliable.
I know Norton has a great reputation but I had a few bad experiences with that when it came to installing programs so I'd prefer to avoid it if possible.. Was this just a one off?
So, fire away I'm ready for all recommendations for and against..
:)
MCHost-Marc 07-25-2001, 08:58 PM We use Norton AntiVirus 2000 (updated every day ;)) and it works great!
SoftWareRevue 07-25-2001, 09:10 PM Yeh.....I love Norton.
Of course I turn it off when I'm installing new programs;)

I use Trend-Micro's PC-cillin (www.antivirus.com) on my Windows 2000 box. Very reliable, you don't know it's there until it detects something odd.
I found Norton to be too much of a resource hog for the real-time scans, plus the Norton auto-update problems occur too frequently.
Trend-Micro has a 30-day trial.
XTStrike 07-26-2001, 09:31 AM we use "Network Associates - Virus Scan NT/2000"
Shawn (GEcom) 07-26-2001, 05:13 PM McAffee VirusScan 5.x
Saved me a few times ;) Mainly the stupid KAKWorm.

siwatts 07-26-2001, 05:40 PM Well, it must be an individual PC problem you're having. McAfee Clinic AV works perfectly on my 2 machines, with the exception of the odd freeze mid page trans.... soon cured with a refresh though.
It has NEVER let me down. I do however have bad experiences with Norton, so I guess it's more down to individual machine configs than one being better than the other. Do whatever floats your boat!

I wish I could say the same but ever since the changeover to the Agent program and a distinct increase in the number of page refreshes, etc.. I've come to the conclusion that packet drops basically throw the whole thing totally... I know I'm not alone either as there's a large number of complaints on the forums at McAfee about the exact same issues...
As for their reasoning re: ISP's, all my traceroute reports show the connection dying about a router or so from their server.

Anyway, thanks for all the recommendations... I think I know where I'll be headed shortly... Cheers
Eagle 07-26-2001, 05:58 PM NAV (Norton Anti Virus) 2001 rocks! :D
kunal 07-27-2001, 12:20 AM anyone seen/used Inoculate? you can get it at http://support.cai.com... its free.. and seems to do the job for me...
indiboi 07-27-2001, 03:12 AM my vote would have to go with Norton AV 2001, esp with the rash of email based virus attacks... It's very nice that it scans every email before it hits my inbox. :D

Hmm, what a waste of 30 minutes of my modems life :(
Slows down my pc to a hault, adds at least 10 seconds onto every program opening....Think I'll try Kunals recommendation :)
alpha 07-27-2001, 04:44 AM running NAV 2001 on my machine...
runs pretty smooth altho it slows down my comp when i have auto-protect open since it scans every thing I run..
so i just enable auto-protect when im downloading something just to make sure there's nothing fishy in there :)

Computer Associates will continue to provide support and virus definition updates for existing registered users with InoculateIT Personal Edition installed on their systems, but is no longer distributing the software or registering new users
:( :(
Lawrence 07-27-2001, 07:26 AM I use Vet AntiVirus, which has a very good reputation also. They're Australian based, I'm not sure if they do much international business, but you can check them out at http://www.vet.com.au.
eva2000 07-27-2001, 08:25 AM using NAV 2001 from NAV System Works 2001 awesome caught every worm virus so far :)
