UH-Matt 07-11-2003, 03:55 AM Damn. :(
-Edward- 07-11-2003, 03:58 AM why damn?
UH-Matt 07-11-2003, 04:06 AM More and more servers on the lovely network, I know they can handle it, im just selfish :) :)
drhonk 07-11-2003, 10:53 AM I hope they isolate the network for those servers. I really hate to see one windows server killing everybody's connection because that server has a virus. You know that will happen eventually .. its windows .. :)
MattF 07-11-2003, 10:56 AM I think the perception is long gone and for those that don't understand windows. Windows 2003 is a very secure operating system. I would say a badly setup Linux server is less secure than a badly setup Windows server, Windows 2003 is secure out of the box.
No undetectable trojans and fresh re-installs upon compromise.

I don't know many numb-skulls that are running Outlook Express to check their email or surfing the web on their dedicated server. That's about the only way you can get a virus now days without physical access to the server.
wubwob 07-11-2003, 02:10 PM Lets hope they actually set administrator passwords :)

Nah...

Just one example of many. SQL server != Outlook express.
But we're looking forward to the announcement as we'd like to have windows platforms available as well, and are currently 'shopping'.

It's also very new. Wait, and bugs and vulnerabilities will come out. I've not used 2003 but hopefully MS will stay on top of vulnerabilities and improve their patching scheme...

protecweb 07-11-2003, 02:22 PM Adminstrator passes should be set by the client as soon as they receive a machine anyway.

BiGWill 07-11-2003, 03:21 PM So what's your opinion of 2003 Mike?
Is it really "secure out of the box" ?
I don't think any OS, besides OpenBSD in the default installation :D , is.
And what are the main advantages of 2003 compared to 2000 ?

Maybe it's the administrator:eek2:

UmBillyCord 07-11-2003, 04:17 PM Not to start a war, but I do not recall my Linux boxes shutting down networks when the Nimda or Code Red worms were out. ;)
To me this is the only concern we have mixing the two. I like what others have said. Put MS boxes in separate VLANS/etc....
nicklaws 07-11-2003, 04:26 PM Last I heard they were being seperated...though it's been a month since I was told this so it may have changed :)
RackMy.com 07-12-2003, 12:13 AM Maybe it's the administratorThat would be administratorS as we have hundreds of servers, but you are very correct! An OS is only as good as it's admin. Not to start a war, but I do not recall my Linux boxes shutting down networks when the Nimda or Code Red worms were out. You would be surprised how many times I have...So what's your opinion of 2003 Mike?
Is it really "secure out of the box" ?It's pretty locked down out of the box.
