View Full Version : SSL Questions
Marlon 07-10-2003, 07:00 PM I am running a windows server and I would like to offer shared SSL on my hosting plans and to my existing customers.
1) So far ive been recommended to use GeoTrust or Comodo SSL.. Which is the best?
2) Since i will be offering shared SSL, how many certs would i have to purchase?
SwampThing 07-25-2003, 05:06 PM Check out http://wwwwhichssl.org (http://www.whichssl.org)
Also, it looks like Comodo is not highly spoken of:

SwampThing 07-25-2003, 05:08 PM Grr..
******* = ********
SwampThing 07-25-2003, 05:15 PM pfft...
I guess this board is editing out that domain name or somethin', but it's spelled w,h,i,c,h,s,s,l dot org.

"We have also been made aware that Comodo has been banned by the popular Web Hosting Forum www.webhostingtalk.com for spamming related offenses."
How hilarious! Highlighting how a competitor was banned in this forum, and forgetting to mention that they, too, are banned.

Apollo
webworkz 07-27-2003, 08:48 PM 1. Comodo used to barrage hosts with SPAM emails. When I responded to one telling them that they were shooting themselves in the foot by SPAM'ing hosts, the guy took it upon himself to fire a nasty email back. Needless to say, we don't deal with Comodo, period.
2. Thawte used to be a great company. Way back when, they used to call us from their offices [I believe in South Africa] just to double-check and give us updates. I realize that all they were doing was trying to market more services to existing customers, but hey; most companies do. They were always a respectable company.... Until VeriSign bought them.
When it tooks us 2 months to renew one of our SSL certificates, after VeriSign purchased them, we quit purchasing from them. Oh, the best part; they managed to fax us the wrong company information TWICE. They had to fax us some documents to sign and send back. The first two times, there was another company's information listed.
As for our SSL needs nowadays, our company SSL's are purchased from GeoTrust.
armstrong 07-27-2003, 10:55 PM why was which*** banned?
Primal Blue 07-27-2003, 11:12 PM GeoTrust seems to be great. After working with Thwate for so many years it was great to see the setup happen in minutes not days.
Plus you can become a GeoTrust reseller and get the certs very cheap.

I don't think w.h.i.c.h.s.s.l dot COM and w.h.i.c.h.s.s.l dot ORG are the same entities... it least that's what appears to be the case when I do a 'whois' search for the domains.
It seems this board banned the '2nd Level' only and not both the '2nd Level' and 'Top Level'.
Hell, I could be wrong though.

Heh, they are definately NOT the same...
The following explains a little (halfway through the post I kinda changed my mind and rewrote it, thus the craziness)
I was going to say...
"I think the .org is rather shady. The .com looks rather reputable.
www.w-h-i-c-h-s-s-l.com/browser_recognition_table.html shows the most complete and usable data I've ever seen on digital certificates. Everyone that is considering certs should check them out.
However, betterwhois.com shows .com is owned by comodo. The .org is owned by some Chris Bailey with an Emory.edu email address who definately does not like Comodo.
I'm still looking for a reputable, exhaustive, unbiased comparison table. If anyone knows where one is please post. I'm still looking.
BTW, both sites seem to agree that Comodo simply rebrands/resells certs from another company.

For those searching later... Keywords: Instant SSL Verisign Thawte Entrust Baltimore GeoTrust IPSCA Komodo(But with a C)"

Well they sell a chained certificate.. Its not really rebranded....
crazyj 08-14-2003, 03:47 AM What does chained certificate mean? I'm rather new at this, thus why I'm doing lots of research.
SoftWareRevue 08-14-2003, 07:38 AM When the filter was put in, it was put in as whichssl. I've just changed that so we can talk about whichssl.org, but not ************* :)

It's arguable whether a company that Spams can ever be redeemed, but for the record, Comodo did repent a while back, issued a written apology (to us, at least) and we haven't seen any incidents since then.

amusive.com 08-14-2003, 10:06 AM RS offers a nice cert for $25. Cheap, very well accepted, no problems. No support either though ;)

Can you give details as to why it was put in? Is it because .com was spamming people? Just curious...
