in march Webalizer 1.3 broke on my RaQ4r for some unknown reason. i have heard that a few others had the same problem around the same time (maybe a security upgrade killed it). after trying to figure out how to upgrade to 2.1 without crashing my server or killing PHP (both known problems) i eventually gave up. after recent customer pressure i decided to pay 4webspace to install it for me after referrencing all the posts and documentation that i could find on the upgrade problem to them first. they ended up charging me $100 for the upgrade (sounded fair to me). i didn't have any down time and everything on my server including PHP is working fine still (10 days later). the moral of this story is if you are too scared to risk it on your own, for $50/hour, 4webspace will do it for you.

i wish i knew about them as well, would have saved my staff some time fixing all the previous problems 1.3 created.

I haven't used them for this particular service, but i have for other services.

They have great service and customer support.
I'd recommend them to anyone.

just my 2 cents.

Well ...

I found that one of the security updates somehow failed to restart the cron daemon!

This caused the log file to never get processed and basically stop logging once it hit 2gb.

What I had to do was:

1. Remove the old log file.
2. Restart the cron.

I then had the issue with the log files not being processed fast enough, so I had to enable persistant logging for webalizer and also set it to run right after the internal stat logging is performed.

And now it seems to be working fine, even on my high traffic site.

I'm using webalizer 1.3, with no problems, although i installed it by hand.

For upgrading can't i just copy the new script over the old one ? it is just a script right ?

No, it's not "just" a script.

Webalizer is composed of one or more binary programs. Normally you would also find the needs of things like a configuration file, a shell/perl script to automate running Webalizer, a crontab entry, etc.
