View Full Version : Do I need a new host?

Hello everyone,

I'm currently with aletiahosting. I want to set up an Ikonboard on my site, but according to aletiahosting's policies they do not allow flatfile message boards. They do have a good hosting package, but definitely not the best in the industry. I just like their speed. Interesting thing is that there are several Ikonboards hosted on aletiahosting that I know of and they seem to have no problem. I tried emailing their tech support, but all I got was a quote from the "Acceptable Policies". Does anyone have any suggestions? Ikonboard is currently a DBM module (idatabase module) board and will soon be MySQL. What do you all suggest I do in the mean time?

Sorry...may appear as a double post, as I posted this in Advertising by mistake.

Nice board. Checked out the host too, seems very reasonable. Thanks for the info. Another good host just kicked flatfile BB's to the curb. F5Hosting.com
Beginning August 16, 2001, we will not allow any UBB or yaBB bulletin board systems to operate on our servers. These BB's are using flat files and put undue stress on the servers. For this reason, we will disallow these BB's to run on our servers.
No host seems to want to keep these BB's onboard, even for extra pay.:bawling:

I know that there's some information on aletiahosting if you use the search function for this board :D

What is it about Ikonboard that makes it a "must-have" over any other? Certainly not the flat-file feature. :)

As an alternative, you might look at phpBB (phpbb.com). It's an excellent, free MySQL board script and is a snap to install.

i'm fine where the information is concerned. Aletia people simply say that they DO NOT support flatfile version of iB. My problem is that the current version of iB works on an idatabase module (DBM) so it apparently is nowhere near as cumbersome on servers as other flatfiles like UBB and YABB. F5Hosting helped clarify that last bit. The big question now is do I stick around and wait for the MySQL version to come out, or should I just move to a new host right now? Since aletiahosting is unwilling to budge or clarify itself better on the issue.

Thanks alchiba, I just like the format, look and (many, many more) features of the iB versus the phpBB.

Yes Ihoppoet, for the money ($0.00) Ionboard is in my opinion the best thing going out there.

A lot of hosts have banned flatfile db boards as it take up to much resources on a shared server. I used to use IkonBoard, and am now very happy with phpBB. I wouldnt leave your current host for not allowing ikonboard, but congratulate them for trying to save the resources on your server for you and all there other customers. They are just looking out for you.
