View Full Version : Opinions on ENSIM on NT??
AH-Tina 07-24-2001, 03:02 PM I'm getting ready to dive head-first into NT hosting - after years of offering only Linux accounts.
Wow, is NT stuff different!!! Licensing fees? ACK!
Anyway, I'm considering using Ensim for the control panel. Any thoughts? Any suggestions?

UmBillyCord 07-24-2001, 03:11 PM Tina,
To use Ensim for Windows you need ServerXchange 2.5. This price varies on your rep. However plan on paying $4000 for the ServerXchange box. Then $50/mo/Windows box you Ensim enable. Ensim just signed an agreement with Microsoft to offer low cost licensing. Our rep said we can get a Windows 2000 Server license for $35/mo. Not too bad. Beats forking over upfront cost.
Currently the Ensim stand alone WEBppliance is only for Linux, so you can not use that.
We have stopped using Ensim until 3.0 comes out in September. So we can not comment on the Ensim enabled Windows solution and how well it works.
NetRemedy 07-25-2001, 09:20 AM Quote from Compaq's web site
Ensim WEBppliance is a suite of applications that, when installed on a Compaq ProLiant server running Red Hat Linux 6.1 or Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, transforms it into a "soft" appliance ideally suited for virtual web hosting.

AH-Tina 07-25-2001, 09:27 AM Yes, but is anyone here actually using it on a non-*nix machine?

Yes, but you still need ServerXchange to do this. If you do not use Ensim, it really doesn't do any good to post. We use it and know that they do not have a Windows stand alone product like they do for RH 6.2. ServerXchange is for RH 6.1 and Windows.
Like, I said, unless you want to fork over some cash, Ensim will not help with Windows right now. As far as how well the Windows solution works, try the forum they have -

AH-Tina 07-25-2001, 11:44 AM Okay, any suggestions for a control panel for NT then??

That seems to be a hot topic lately. If you look in this forum for control panels, you will see at least 3 recent ones asking the same question.
ksstudio 07-26-2001, 10:04 AM Greetings,
Our Dell Win2K server at EFS is "up" for weeks now and we still cannot do anything on it.
We are still looking for a Win2K control panel with mail server. We received several suggestions from some rep out there but basically comes to 2 way:
1. Get really $$$ Windows 2000 mail server and installe d on tha dell box.
2. Setup another Linux box for DNS and install some linux mail server on it and get another control panel for the dell win2k box
Is there any thing out there which can offer some thing like CPanel and dun really cost that much?
:bawling:
DrAtomic 08-15-2001, 06:50 PM Hi,
I've got the same problem over here (maybe even bigger since I'm not capable of handling *nix boxes (been a NT sysadmin for 5 years now)). After intense research all I come up with are 5 options:
http://www.microsoft.com/ISN (look for the webpanel; it's free; but it's buggy and needs a lot of work (what I got from reading the forums that is).
http://www.hostingcontroller.net (looks so so, functionality wise so so as well but completly editable source, however doesn't really go beyond the front end user panel, mail support is great however)
http://www.ensim.com ( I just dunno, it looks like the complete business model to me but the pricing is pretty extreme and I just spend 60000$ on my servers and cabinet and I would need to buy additional unix boxes and can't use the mail package I want. Their sales pitch is somewhat too slick for me (which tells me: yeah spend lot's of buckaroos with us and we will have a complete marketing department at hand to send you more useless stuff then you'll be capable of handling and more since will need to prove you value!!!)).
http://www.psoft.com (looks like a lite version of Ensim which just got back from a major fashion show which is somewhat distorting my opinion because it looks so sexy, however this would mean buying some additional unix boxes as well and when doing so I start to loose sight why I am on W2K and shouldn't convert to Unix and start the eval process all over).
http://www.digitalpoint.com (Product ISPGold, billing package from nature, not sure if it's got a control panel, haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, however great international support)
Any help out there???
DrAtomic (looking to be nursed :D )
JBIZ718 08-16-2001, 03:13 AM Ive used ensim win 2k many times and overall not too impressed.
I would talk to the people at www.handynetworks.com; Mike could help you, dont quote me though
