cbaker17 07-23-2001, 06:10 PM Icq is the only program i have that manages to lock up my computer its almost worst than microsoft.
determinist 07-23-2001, 06:35 PM ICQ wasn't that good but never 203,800k memory usage!

determinist 07-23-2001, 09:35 PM The number of contacts you have might also affect the program. Mine is taking up 12000k with about 100 contacts, not that bad.

You can actually set it up just like the older ICQ versions (and get rid of the ads). Here is a screenshot of mine..
ckizer 07-24-2001, 06:24 AM Besides the obvious fact that so many people already have ICQ screennames, why is it that so many people insist on using their slow network? Not to meantion the chat client software, who designed the ICQ client? You can obviously tell that ICQ doesn't have a single good GUI designer on their team. You'd think that even a FREE project with *millions* of users would be able to find one good designer. I can't stand the way the features are laid out. It's like having a kitchen sink living room!
And that's my rant/rave for the next 20 minutes. Everybody have a good day :D

Aint I a life saver? :D
Craig 07-24-2001, 11:31 AM Just an update, seems my contact list had become currupt some how, causing a memory leak.
Fixed it and now its working fine.
Using 3Mb now :)
A vast improvement

Craig
alpha 07-24-2001, 01:15 PM yep...
icq takes more memory usage then my photoshop...
i swear icq needs to stop with the useless features that they think is going to make their service better yet sluggish their overall service...
annoying at best...

ICQ is a direct service, msn etc goes through one central server, but ICQ does it direct to IP.

It was initally mirablillis, but now AOL.
You'd think that even a FREE project with *millions* of users would be able to find one good designer.
As I said above, ICQ is now owned by AOL, not many people realise this :) it is free, but AOL paid about $50million for mirabillis (and icq). Apparently for the email lists/ user info as opposed to getting a nice service going.
ICQ is better IMHO as it is a ip:ip service, here in the UK msn users suffered an outage for about a week. That is the problem with services that relay on a single point...
Just my 10p.

creepcolony 07-24-2001, 05:47 PM aw you mean i can't check unless i'm on windows 2000? :(
i never upgraded my icq i am using 99 and it is much better...no stupid ads or anything
ckizer 07-24-2001, 07:05 PM Actually while AOL ownes them, they agreed not to make changes to the software for like 2 years. Lets hope 2 years go by really fast.
akashik 07-24-2001, 09:41 PM Being an original ICQ adorer, now MSN user, I've also become a recent convert to Trillian. The fact that ICQ has blown out to a 5 meg download and loads like 'yo fat momma walking up the stairs' is all the more amazing considering Trillian is a skimpy little 400k or whatever it is, and loads up all those connections at once in a heart beat... :)

Craig 07-24-2001, 11:21 PM WELL
My icq problem seemed to cause more and more..
It crashed out my system before (really hogged the memory) then i had to reboot.
After the reboot i just could not get into windows, just BSOD then restarted, repeate the process.. then that was it!
Even in safe more
Had to do a full re-install..
What an arse of a night!
Only problem i have with trillian is that the IRC bit of it isnt that advanced (or wasnt last time i checked) needs to be more like mIRC :]
Cant beat the best heh
Regards
Craig
Dogma 07-25-2001, 12:08 AM I uninstalled ICQ for the simple reason that I kept getting: "See grandparents gettin it on" ads. I didn't want to mess around w/ filtering it, so I just uninstalled. I'm glad I did!!
DarkVengeance 07-25-2001, 02:50 AM I've been using icq for about 2 years. I agree it is a little slow at sending messages, and the ads get annoying. However I found a solution! You can remove the ads using a crack, and block the web url messages in security/privacy. I sure hope icq never becomes like aim... Aim is the most unprofessional software I have ever seen.
Get-Hosted.com 07-25-2001, 02:56 AM Get Trillian: trillian.cc it's a great pgoram, and will solve your problem.
Studio-51 07-25-2001, 02:11 PM Further to previous responses, there is a neat SMALL version of ICQ @ http://www.icq.com/icqwebbie
It is alpha version, but as ICQ never gets out of beta is that a suprise :)
I find this very useful when away and d/ling 5 meg isnt an option.
