View Full Version : when is enough-enough?
johnnyc 07-04-2003, 01:42 AM hi,
i've got a reseller package from a decent enough company but they recently moved to a new datacenter and service has been really bad.
i've paid for a year in advance and don't know about a refund on the remaining 7 or 8 months left on the account.
i mean that they have a lot of dns problems. my sites disappear without a trace and then reappear and finally, some of my hosts have lost email accounts.
so at what point do i say, you know what...screw it...i'm outta here?
i ask because this company's techs do try to help but they often miss the mark. and i'm left with unhappy customers.
If you have unhappy customers, how can you afford to stay? Soon your customers will probably start leaving too. I wouldn't reccomend staying anywhere that is making your customers unhappy.
Just my $0.02...
aushost 07-04-2003, 03:09 AM When the hosting company starts having problems and your clients are suffering, there is no loyalty. You cannot procrastinate hopeing that its going to get better because speaking from experience it doesn't. Your the only one who gets ulcers. Move as quick as you can to an enviroment without the hassles otherwise you will loose your clients, your "life blood".
webideas 07-04-2003, 05:00 PM If you find that the techs at your current hosting company are incompetent & you are facing the problems regularly then its the time you should plan to move.
If you wait..your customer might not like to wait..and then you'll be the only one hosting your site on the reseller plan ;)
eBoundary 07-07-2003, 11:33 AM Your customers are your life, without them you don't have a business. If they are not happy, do what ever needs to be done to keep them, if this means finding another host then by all means i would suggest jumping ship and finding a reliable host with better support and stable servers.
MrLeN 07-07-2003, 07:47 PM I made the same mistake with a hosting company. I has nothing but problems, but decided that there will be an end. The only end I saw was the end of my business.
Move on asap. Not tomorrow.. start today. Notify your customers. Be honest with them and they will understand.
Tell them that you are moving because you value them.

gtrplayer 07-07-2003, 07:53 PM i've had a lot of problems since january with my current host. most of the problems have been dns related and everytime they have dropped the problem back into the lap of the reseller (me and their other clients).
i lost one really big customer because of their problems and am debating on whether renewing or not.
the providers are good guys and i really feel for them and try to help them but sometimes i think that they are overwhelmed.
you're probably better off moving to a new provider unless you have the luxury that i do of using this as a second income for vacation purposes. if it's your livlihood--get while the gettin's good.
MrLeN 07-07-2003, 07:56 PM Just get out - now.
If you smell smoke, it's almost always a fire.

ttremeth 07-07-2003, 08:21 PM With the policies these days, you may not get a refund. I always gave refunds for advance payments but there you are...
Do they have a number you can call and discuss?
johnnyc 07-07-2003, 11:02 PM yes...i'm not worried about getting my money back. i guess it's a question of loyalty. i was always taught to dance with who brung you and my current host i won't mention names, has been very patient and nice to me. they have walked me through some rough spots but i guess when all is said and done, i've got to put the people who trust me with their money first.
thanks

Some quick advice,
Never pay for a year in advance of service, or even 6 months for that matter.

Take some good advise, which this whold thread pretty much is, and get the problems fixed or get a new Hoster.
That's really all there is to it.
DarktidesNET 07-08-2003, 08:03 AM If your customers are unhappy you should be unhappy ... 'nuff said. :)
TAH-Max 07-11-2003, 12:51 PM Don't inform them until a week or more after you've moved. The worst thing you can do is cancel your account with them before your new account has propogated for all clients. Remember, just because it has propogated for you, it may not for everyone :)
VNPIXEL 07-11-2003, 01:17 PM I still don't understand why people still like to pay YEARLY?
mpalamar 07-11-2003, 06:34 PM Downtime blamed on DNS is inexcusable. DNS is one of the simple things to make redundant when operating a host or reseller business. Your host probably has more deep seeded problems than just DNS.
unca-scrooge 07-12-2003, 06:20 PM ok wait...where can i learn about dns and setting it up properly? i'm getting ready to start my own reseller biz and could use the lessons.
