We're looking at picking up 5-8 of these, Dual PIII 1 GHz, anybody have experience? How about a place to get them?
One question we had, Anything precluding us from getting a single CPU and then buying another CPU elsewhere and sticking it in? Do we have to get it from Compaq w/ a kit? What the heck is in those kits that makes them so wildly expensive anyhow? TIA

I have a proliant 5500. As for getting them, I now get mine from ebay because it is cheaper. Nothing is stopping you from getting one prossesor, then another without getting one of those kits. The kits include everything you need so they are always your best bet. Ebay usually has the kits for cheap. If you do not get a kit just make sure you get the right parts. I am buying a new prossessor, all I did was make sure I got the right kind and cache size and its all going fine.

If you install a second CPU that is anything but the Compaq then Compaq can have the option of voiding your warranty if you need service.

Otherwise the Compaq server are very SOLID!!!
