I've never done that before. You must have fat fingers!

I've left the second g out of google once or twice -- www.goole.com

"googlecom.com" is a porn site I believe. I left the "." out once and my browser put ".com" on the end for me...

What I don't get is how they think this'll help. If I mis-type "Microsoft" and get a Social Security page, I'm not going to think "Hey, Microsoft must want me to sign up for this..." Same for the WHT thing -- I'm not going to think that they bought out WHT.

IMHO, this is bad for them -- getting someone else's page, if anything, will anger you, or make you think you typed it correctly and they've 'hacked in' and put their page up instead. I wonder if _anyone_ would buy from them as a result of getting the wrong page. Frankly, I'd rather not have swarms of angry people visit my site... :)

Right around 1995 I think they added a new feature to the web browser - its called a Bookmark, you might want to try it :)

Fog is exactly right. When people try to go to webhostingtalk.com - they know where they are going and what to expect from a web site, but when they see a hosting company trying to get some sign ups because of this - it is hugely mistaken - no one will sign up because they know what's going on. Did anybody get that?

Doesn't IE have a "links" bar? That's what I use, the bookmarks toolbar in Mozilla Firebird. I put the sites I most frequently visit in it :)

On my Linux box, I used to put my favorite sites in /etc/hosts. "fm" would resolve to freshmeat.net's IP, and so on.

But then I realized that my browser's URL bar will automatically show you recently-typed URLs and take you there, so it ends up being easier now to type "webh" and hit enter :)

I misspelled webhostingtalk.com as ******************* and someone actually registered that name... and it forwards a hosting company... thats just hilarious.

And his servers are at rack shack.

That's rich.

Not a bad idea though. One sign up per year would pay for the domain.

I do that quite often mispelling popular domains is a good way for traffic.

they are very common and can earn a great deal of money through Pay Per Click search engines or just taking that traffic for yourself (in this particular case).

At least you ended up at a hosting company and didn't go into 'porn popup' hell like a lot of mispelt domains point to :)

What about the people that come to this site for the first time just to look for a new host? Seeing the host that is taking advantage of the typo might make them sign up for that host if it meets their needs.

They may get traffic, but is it quality traffic? I doubt it.

Mozilla Firebird lets you set keywords to your bookmarks, so web will take you to webhostingtalk.com. However, if you can't spell web.. tsk tsk!

typo traffic can be very targetted towards a niche, such as this site. Those people are getting traffic that is pretty much pure hosting traffic.

as for examples of this, theres whitehouse.com instead of gov, but not a typo per se.
just typo some domains and see what happens, most big sites have typos taken.

You do know of this neat little thing called "Auto Complete" comes with M$. :)

Actually my homepage for IE is a HTML file hosted on my hd (very fast aka Localhost hehe) but I have text links on that page to many sites I use frequently, forums, links to popular search engines, online shops/auctions, ect. Makes going around easy, since I bookmark too many sites and hate dealing with "My Favorites" For a couple sites on my start page, I even put in some pix for myself. :)

:emlaugh: I actually think it was implemented earlier than that.

But yeah, I have a link to WHT in my link bar in Mozilla. One click on the WHT favicon/name and boom, I'm here. :)
