View Full Version : cPanel
country1 07-01-2003, 09:47 PM Can someone here tell me if cPanel goes down if that means you cannot view your website either? My host is telling me that cpanel went down and this is why I could not see my site.
Isn't cPanel software that you install on a server? Because he made it sound like it was separate and that the "cPanel people" were working on it.
I'm not very "techie" so I thought I would ask here.... I'm learning alot from everyone here... it's much appreciated!! :D
TIA
Christy
Nope, apache != cpanel.
httpd can still be up without cpanel.
Choppy 07-01-2003, 10:22 PM Dont think cpanel can be down itself, other services on the servers can.
Even if the license is not correct on a server the websites will work but not email and access to the control panel.
I could be wrong though or they could be using a bad excuse.
Regards
Phillip
Lippy 07-01-2003, 11:14 PM Last I checked cpanel being down or not functioning would not cause sites to be unviewable.
listerine2 07-01-2003, 11:35 PM I don't know about you guys, but I never liked the looks for CPanel, its like the person who created them has no clew about information design, and even less about graphic design.
Although I must say that MT has one of the better looking and more logical looking ones (they made it themselves...figures).

Christy Something is not right here.
The 'Cpanel people' only work on a Server if they have been asked and even then, they will only do so if Cpanel itself created the problem. If your Hoster, or another Client on the Server, created the problem and/or the Hoster does not know how to fix the problem (whatever it is), your site could be down for a long time.
There is a possiblity that there is a Cpanel Licensing problem and if so, you will see a msg. to that effect when you try to view your site.
Either way, your current situation is not good and your Hoster does not appear to be giving the straight goods.
And in case anyone is wondering, I do run a WHM/Cpanel Server and have a lot of familiarity with it. In 2 yrs. of using Cpanel, I have never had Client Web sites unreachable, because 'Cpanel went down'. More clarification is needed as to what 'exactly' is meant by that statement.
sprintserve 07-02-2003, 07:50 AM Cpanel uses it's own server. They do own the Pop server, so that will stop working if you have a problem with the license etc. Other than that, Apache, Bind, etc are all separate pieces of software that will not be affected.
If you post your URL, I am sure some members here will attempt to find out what's wrong or at least hazard an educated guess.
country1 07-02-2003, 08:10 AM Thanks to everyone that has replied here! The page is up and running again, but this is not the first time this has happened, but everytime it is a different reason.
Now this is something I do not understand. I just checked the Alerta web monitoring for my host, and it says that his uptime has been 100% even after last night. How is that possible? Would not my server have been down if I could not view my web site? I'm a little confused here. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!!
TIA

sprintserve 07-02-2003, 08:56 AM What's the frequency Alertra is checking?
At the same time, what services are monitored? If it is just a simple ping, the server can be up, but the Apache is down.

It also depends in the host's site is on the same server as yours. I get this all the time when one of my servers is offline.
"Why is your site up and mine is not"
Or the dreaded.
"MY SITE IS DOWN" I go to their site and it is up just fine. I am like Charlie Brown when Lucy moves the football, UUUUUGGHHH. Esp with a customer who has no clue what a traceroute is. They may be blocked, I have had customers blocked by the data center, backbone problems, their own ISP. Without a traceroute it is hard to say what the problem is.
country1 07-02-2003, 10:16 AM Well the hosts site was down too! So I don't know if that means anything or not. Everytime my site has been down so has the hosts site.
Also the email was still working but the site was not. Don't know so what does that mean?
TIA

DangerMouse 07-02-2003, 01:22 PM This sounds to me like apache failed, which, for some reason, alertra does not pick up on.
Apache will stop web pages being served, but other things like email, etc, will continue to work.
If your host was to check there error logs, it would probably indicate a lot of errors saying that they needed to increase FD_SETSIZE with an apache rebuild. That would cure it.
