View Full Version : I've outgrown my current host - where to next?

I'm using a small company called WebStrike (http://www.webstrikesolutions.com) to host my website, and they've done an excellent job. Most impressive, my site has grown by leaps and bounds on their servers, and they haven't even blinked in speed, reliability, or space. But, I think I have reached my limit, and their hosting plan (using extra bandwidth) is just too costly for me to continue using them much longer.

So, getting to the point...

My biggest need (at the moment) is bandwidth. Right now, in one day, I get around 3,000 unique visitors which easily suck up at least 700 MB of traffic. After figuring it out, I need a host with somewhere around 30 GB of bandwidth a month - which is incredibly hard to find! (I've even been turned away.) Also, I'd like much more webspace than what I've got now (50 MB), preferably 500+ MB, but less would be OK. My site's forum is gradually eating up space every day, so I want to be prepared for any future growth. And, of course, I want all this at the lowest possible price.

I've looked all around at hostsearch.com and hostindex.com, but I can't really come up with much more than small re-selling companies that make me wonder about the quality of their service. I know I'm going with a very small host right now, but I feel that I've found a diamond in the rough, judging by what I have heard so many others say.

So, does anyone have any good ideas (or offers :)) on where to place the future home of GTPlanet?

Lancia, does your host use mod_gzip? That can drastically reduce your bandwidth. I'll email you more information.

Ah, so unless they are running Apache on that Win2k server, they probably aren't running it. :( Another reason to root for unix. :) Unless you have ASP requirements, then you're kinda stuck unless you can find a Unix host with ChilliASP AND mod_gzip. :(

Either way, keep us posted. :)

I recieved your email and mod_gzip does sound great! :) I will probably be going with a UNIX server when I upgrade, so I will be sure and look into that. Thank you!

Lancia, do you have max monthly budget? If you want a fast connection/server host, it will costs you a few dollars. You might also want to try posting in the Web Hosting Offers and Requests (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=4) forum since hosts are not allowed to posts offers in this forum.

Just be sure to ask potential hosts for mod_gzip, or if they will install it for you. It will help, even if it's just a little. Every gig counts. :)

Thanks, zolbian. :D

Why don't you go for a virtual dedicated server? They aren't too expensive and usually offer much better performance than a Virtual server.

I recommend you try Worldzone Pro (http://www.wzpro.com/). Their Diamond Plan provides 32 GB bandwidth and 960 MB space for $32 monthly.

There is no sign-up form for it at the moment; you have to email one of the admins (alycia@worldzone.net) to order an account.

It uses a Unix server with mod_gzip installed.
