View Full Version : A *single* IP or dedicated IP for *each* domain/website hosted (19 on 1 machine) ?

Hello,

I'm a first time web host with a single dedicated/co-located machine thrust upon me to administer!

I have been asked to set up 19 web sites (each with unique.com registered domain names) on one machine.

Should I request my ISP provide a unique IP for each domain/web site to be hosted? Or all under on IP?

What I'm asking - will it be easier/faster/or simpler for me to administer these sites - if they each have their own assigned unique IP. As opposed to *one* IP and a number of "virtual" web sites!

Some of these sites will have .htaccess user/password and member tracked, subscription/paid services. (I dont know if unique IP effects the way apache user/passwords are handled.) Some may have ssl requirements.

The co located system is Dialtone Internet in Florida - runnig linux, red hat 6.22 apache 1.3.20.

I hope to make my job easier - in the long run!

TIA!

You should be able to run everything under one IP except for the ones needing ssl as each ssl site needs its own IP, there are also a few scripts and programs which may or may not require their own IP.

As for it being easier to admin, i dont think so, it might take 5 more minutes to assign each their own IP, but thats about it.

Apache can handle vhosting easily, and will meet your requirements for password protection, so http isn't your problem, will these sites be running anon ftp? If so, then they will need a dedicated IP to each address, ftp protocal currently lacks any features to vhost such as apache does...

If you can afford it, its very nice to have your own IP on an account, so you can begin working on your site, before the domain gets transfered, and can help users move their sites seemlessly, from their older server, to the new one, by just changing the A or CNAME record for their domain.....

Does having an IP for each website/domain make the server response more snappy?

Reduce the workload on the system as well? I would think it would, but not sure.

Not at all, in fact.. we have seen server speeds a bit quicker using name based.

it doesn't matter if the domain is using namebased or IPbased.

If you can get the IP's for free then go ahead and use IPbased hosting, I believe DialTone servers comes with free IP's.

One has to go through a email based confirmation system to acquire them, I believe with only two new ips allowed per time increment (I think severa hours).

Seems kind of a pain, but it makes less work for them.

If I dont need em, I wont bother.

Just wondered if there were any technical advantages insofar as the server or it's configuration was concerned.
