View Full Version : Your opinion on Cube 3 please
Andrew_Ge 07-21-2001, 11:30 AM Hi all,
I am considering buying a Cobalt Cube 3 to run primarily as a game server for Unreal tournament and Counter strike.
Any feedback as to why or why not i should do this would be greatly appreciated! :D
avara 07-22-2001, 05:50 AM If you're using it to run game servers, I'd get a $500 PC with slightly better stats, and then install Linux on it.
Aloha
well this depends on where you are locating it
does not fit a normal rack
does not have a PIII proccessor
expensive for what you get
is this a new purchase ?? if yes
you may want to look at the valinux closeouts going on think they only have one model left
also look at a dell app server this would be very easy to configure etc...
if used you may want to look at ubid and try to get a server there if ya take your time and do research make sure ya know what you are getting you can get some good deals
if you are colocating this remember usually the bigger the server the more it is going to cost you try to find a 1u server
hope these help
Andrew_Ge 07-23-2001, 06:40 PM Thanks for your Reply guys
I will DEFINATLY have a look at ubid.co.uk and other places on the net. I cant get one from the US as if I plugged it in over here (london) it would go boom due to the voltage diffrence :bawling:
I have also heard since my first post that qube 3's arn't really designed for game servers, so i will save up for a RAQ4!
Aloha
do you have a colo or free bandwith ???
ya might want to check some online places for raqs also
plentty if ya do a search
the rackshack.net deal is hard to beat
but service sucks ;)
Andrew_Ge 07-24-2001, 05:10 PM I have free bandwith
Im currently running a "Portland 44" server (custom built apparently) which cost a one time set up fee of £50
which is about $25 (very roughly) and after that its free!
for ever all I have to do is update the Domain name which is dirt cheap in the uk at £9.99 a domain ($5) but I use it to host other peoples web sites and need a server specifically to run games. The problem is that although US servers are v.nice there half way around the world causing unnessesarry lag and higher pings, I guess I can allways get annother porland 44 server but I really want a qube 3/ RAQ 4 as there so good and look so cool!
Again thanks for all your help guys!
If anyone wants info on how to get a portland 44 server, Email

1. Do you not mean ubid.com instead ubid.co.uk then they want a Username & Password from Me !
2. US-PC at UK-Electricity is no Problem, you can switch it at every PC (look your one) between 110 and 240 !
Andrew_Ge 07-24-2001, 06:34 PM Thanks for your comments
I really dont advice messing about with power supplies especially, not every power supply has a converter for a start (mine is stuck on 240V).
I agree many supplies have switches if so great if not and ur planning on changing over a transformer, well um its a bit iffy when you consider you have an expensive server that you could put beyond use and its easier than u think.
Thats just my oppinion anyway!
Plus there is all the import tax and shipping fee's so it is easier to buy from the UK, I just need info on what is the best server to get to run games:
RAQ3
RAQ4
or that new one that i cant renember what its called!:D

JKLIVIN 07-24-2001, 08:15 PM don't worry about that new one that you can't remember the name, as it has been recalled, xtr btw
I would not reccommend a Cobalt product as a game server. Cobalt uses a modified version of Redhat that is far behind the current RedHat release. The GUI overhead, ASP, and other items on the box make it ideal for web hosting but not for gaming.
Seriously consider buying a highly generic linux box with either FreeBSD or RedHat or whatever the game server requires. You will see tremendous benefits by using a server specifcally tweaked for gaming that does not run a lot of uncessary proccesses.
My friend ran a game server on a PII350 box with 256MB of RAM. The box was tweaked with only a minimal set of services -- (no email, sendmail etc) and tiny httpd install to admin the game server. This box worked great and was inexpensive to build ($400).
kickster 07-25-2001, 11:24 AM Does any host offer the Cube3?
Andrew_Ge 07-25-2001, 02:13 PM lol so there is no hope of me ever running a game on a cobalt, d'oh!
I guess its back to building one myself eh he he!
hey huck, if u could send me the full spec on the $400 bad boy you were talking about I would be v.gratefull!
Cheers!
Andy
P.S Thanks for giving me the other server name!
Almost forgot, My Email address is at the top of the page!
Andrew_Ge 07-27-2001, 04:43 PM By the way guys thought u might get a kick out of this lil quote I found:
"The software asked for "Windows 95 or better"... So I installed Linux" :stickout
lol
