Hi,

Still trying to make a decision. I was looking at site5.com for a dedicated server (around $300 a month) but am now considering a Raq. This is mainly becuase of my lack of experience administering a sever (and the fact that I can get one for half the monthly cost!).

Is this a good reason to consider the Raq? I have looked at the Control Panels and they seem a bit strange, can you put other CP's on them and are they any places that bundle different CP's with them?

Thanks

You are not encourage to do that. It will crash the server if you replace it with another control panel.

Okay, but are they any good?

They are OK but they are very restrictive if you wish to do bulk hosting.

I would suggest that if you are looking to host more than 150 web sites on the same box then I would invest in a Linux dedicated server and a good book on Linux admin (or use webmin).

For cobalts dont accept any less than 500mb of ram either as the chilisoft asp daemon chews up memory and spits it out!

Good Luck:)

Yep, I realise that I should probably go for a Linux box but I am still worried that I will be able to all the admin work using WHM.

Also I was looking at site5.com's PIII 800 with 512mb RAM, 30gb IDE drive at $350. How many sites can be run off this box (small to medium size, average traffic)?

And also how much do site5.com charge for upgrades i cant see it on the site.

I have to say - I have been adminning raqs since they first came out and you will need to get your hands dirty at the bash at sometime so why not start now!

I am not suggesting that you do this but I have successfully run 1700 sites on a PIII with 512mb + 30gb.

The problem is - the more sites you put on a server - the more prone to trouble the server will be.

My suggestion is perhaps 500 - 750 small, low b/width sites. Any more than this and you will difinitely need to tweak the kernal and do some nifty stuff with apache.
