View Full Version : another stupid question, ikonboard and such
Ihoppoet 07-19-2001, 10:04 PM I have yet another stupid question for the forum, but like Regious says the answers are only easy if you know them lol. Anyway, I have seen people say that the boards like this one and ikonboard, take up a lot of bandwidth, how much do they take, and which one takes the least?
thank you

creepcolony 07-19-2001, 10:57 PM php/mysql boards generally use less bandwidth, especially with mod_gzip
sdnet 07-19-2001, 10:59 PM It's probably not the board itself that's taking up the bandwidth, but the activity of the site. If your board is popular, then yes, your bandwidth will go up. It's the nature of discussion board members to keep checking for new discussions and using bandwidth.
Ihoppoet 07-19-2001, 11:26 PM wht is extreamly large, how much BW would you all say it takes? Basicaly I want my board for only a few reasons, so people can review my film, and so they can talk about films and film making.
thank you

sdnet 07-19-2001, 11:31 PM I'm not sure about wht's bandwidth, but I wouldn't be surprised if it surpassed 100 gigs a month. If you're running a small bulletin board, you'll probably have no problem with 6 gigs a month. If you use a bulletin board system will few images, so just html files will be loaded with each request, you'll be better off.
Dogma 07-20-2001, 12:23 AM Actually, from what I have heard, WHT currently uses 20-30 gigs a month

Chicken 07-20-2001, 08:23 PM At one time we were at 20-ish, but these past few months the forum has exploded and now it is more around 50/60 and heading up up up and away...

determinist 07-22-2001, 01:09 AM Do you mean you have problems installing ikonboard? The most common errors for installing CGI should be uploading in acsii mode and CHMOD'ing. If not you could seek some assistance at ikonboard.com, i sure many would be delighted to help you.

Do the forums generate revenue? I see no banner ads and only some minor product mentions at the bottom of the pages. The one for "vBulletin" is just mandatory when using their forum I think. The one for "Red Hat Linux" might be mandatory as well?
The "Voxel Dot Net" isn't much of an ad, are they the ones providing this forum or just hosting it?
The "Ubersmith" ad is the only semi normal product placement/advertisement, but I can't believe that generates enough revenue to pay for a page view.

The forums generate zilch revenue. However, the RH Linux logo is not.... Decoration maybe?

Voxel is our current host. And in case anyone is wondering why the server seems to be occasionally down, it's because Matt is still optimising + fixing the server to his specs (and Voxel is helping out), so we apologise for any inconvenience caused in advance. Hopefully this will be sorted out ASAP.
No profits are made on WHT. It is all purely informational.
And sdnet is correct. The more activity you have on your forums (read : plenty of active members and discussions), the more bandwidth it will consume.

Who is paying for the forums then? To whom do we owe gratitude? Besides the Moderators of course. :)
I looked in the FAQ for this info, but didn't see it listed. If I'm asking questions that are already answered somewhere, sorry.
