View Full Version : Should I go in for a reseller account?
amitabh 06-25-2003, 01:58 PM I have been developing various web based application as an extension to some of my desktop/network based applications. I have been using both Windows as well as Linux for my web applications. Till date, I have around 6 windows based and 4 Linux based websites. Also, my various accounts are spread thru 4 different hosts due to various reasons
In this case, does it make sense to consolidate all the accounts to one reseller accountof a single provider, keeping in mind that I have to work on both platforms?
Thanks
Greetings,
In terms of managing your accounts under one roof, I believe reseller plan would be suitable for you. However I believe you cannot host both Linux and Windows based applications all under one reseller plan, but two separate.

3D Host 06-25-2003, 02:11 PM I would get one Windows reseller account and one Linux reseller account. They don't have to be large, just large enough to fit your needs. You may also want to look into VPS/VDS. They are usually less expensive than dedicated servers and you have the freedom to install custom software, modules, etc.
Chachi 06-25-2003, 02:13 PM Or try having a look at Rochen, who are building a multiplatform technology. Rochen's a mod here so I doubt you'd have trouble with his service ;)
amitabh 06-25-2003, 02:52 PM So, I should go in for two reseller accounts, one for each platform.
This would mean that I would have to look for two different providers?
td323i 06-25-2003, 03:10 PM Hi amitabh,
H-sphere control panel allows cross platform web hosting. YOu can host windows and *nix based accounts from under a single control panel. Off the top of my head, i can't think of companies that do it, but i know i saw them on this forum. Hope you find what your looking for.
Thanks,

amitabh 06-25-2003, 03:14 PM I am trying to find one of those integrated providers. Otherwise, I will go in for two of them.
td323i 06-25-2003, 03:19 PM PM sent.
Chachi 06-25-2003, 03:48 PM rules broken: td323i, edit your post before a mod catches you :)
td323i 06-25-2003, 03:51 PM lol... it does kinda' look that way. I just wasn't sure if I was able to recommend a host that I currently have a reseller account with. Sorry for the confusion.
Later,

alexrobonlin 06-25-2003, 03:57 PM oh leave him alone - I think fasthosts.co.uk allow windows and linux hosting - and is just £50 or sommit like that per month for a good spec account
Let us know how u get on!
Cheers
Al
SBH-Max 06-25-2003, 05:18 PM I have seen a reseller recentl.y, can't remember where, that offered offered 5GB storage 50GB bandwidth and you could choose XGB on Windows and XGB on Linux on the registration form. Will point it out to you if I find it again :D
amitabh 06-25-2003, 09:47 PM I have been looking at http://www.nevidia.com .They are offering both platforms. There is also a thread going for them, so I will wait for the feedback.
BTW, has anyone ever tried www.**********.net . Some pretty cheap offerings, but I am not sure of their reputation.
Cirtex 06-25-2003, 09:49 PM well 1 of them is banned from WHT (That should tell you something) :D
amitabh 06-25-2003, 10:00 PM Didn't knew that! Might be the reason they are running their own forums. SO I have only one provider left.
FYH_Support 06-25-2003, 10:02 PM Keep reliability in mind. At the moment, spreading accounts amongst 4 providers gives you an inherently 'stable network'. If you move them all to one provider, and that sole hosting source goes down, you could have issues. Check out SLA's and uptime guarantees.
amitabh 06-25-2003, 10:20 PM Yes, that's the only point which makes me think twice before getting on to a single provider. But I don't get the prices in this case.
I think I will go in for two different providers for Linux and Windows, atleast to spread my risk.
amitabh 06-25-2003, 11:33 PM I think I would like to go in for Dathorn for Linux if they are ready to accept new accounts within the next 5-10 days.
I am in fix about the Windows hosting though.
CrazyTech 06-25-2003, 11:37 PM I would recommend going for 2 accounts with either just one host or with two hosts. Make sure that these are reliable hosts with good uptime. Do your research and do not be afraid to pay a little more for their services.
amitabh 06-25-2003, 11:51 PM I suppose you mean one account each for Linux and Windows. Yes, I am planning on the same lines. I went to Dathorn site, but it seems they have stopped taking in new accounts for the time being. I am yet to find a highly recommended Windows host. But since I am not in a hurry, I can wait for a few days.
amitabh 06-27-2003, 04:07 PM I have decide to go in for " Dathorn.com ", if it starts to accept new accounts within the next 7-10 days. Otherwise, I think I will opt for " HttpMe.com ". I am also keeping one of my earlier host " NXserve.com ". I hope this should spread my risk to a good extent.
Haven't had any success with Windows hosting though?
compunewz 06-27-2003, 06:51 PM What exactly is a reseller account?
Thanks,
David
amitabh 06-27-2003, 10:11 PM Well, I am not a hosting expert, but in a general sense, a reseller account lets you host multiple domains in one ssinngle package. This facility allows you to resell the space to your retail customers directly.
andriven 06-27-2003, 11:28 PM Dathorn is accepting new accounts now, by the way.
amitabh 06-27-2003, 11:32 PM Must have just been a few hours now! I checked it last night, and it still wasn't accepting new accounts.
amitabh 06-28-2003, 08:45 AM Might go in to Webreseller.net for my Windows account, although they did have severe disruption recently.
They also have Linux, so that might help out in future.
