View Full Version : Free Control Panel...
bombino 07-19-2001, 03:22 PM I'm not sure about everyone else, but I am tired of reading all the CPanel3/NOCSoft/WHM/WebPanel ramblings that I see in this forum. It seems to me that what people need is a good, solid, cheap Control Panel. So you know what? I've decided to begin work on a 100% FREE Web Control Panel.
Any feature ideas / recommendations?
Of course I can't dedicate ALL my time to it, yet I hope to have it all working within 6 months.
(SH)Saeed 07-19-2001, 03:52 PM Why don't you help instead with an opensource project that is already started?

bombino 07-19-2001, 04:13 PM Whoa!
I was unaware that such a project existed!
Thanks for the info!
bombino 07-19-2001, 04:44 PM Ehhhh..... I checked out that web.cp Control Panel and well ... I don't really like its structure. I don't think that PHP will be the ideal platform for a control panel-type utility.
Maybe I'll resume my original plan after all. . .
(SH)Saeed 07-19-2001, 05:53 PM What language are you planning to code it in?
What's wrong with PHP? If configured properly you can setup a secure SetUID enviroment for the admin scripts.
I've been thinking about writing a web hosting control panel using php for the front end and probably perl for the back end.

Harumph. I still like Webmin. :)
bombino 07-20-2001, 12:49 AM Well, I understand that PHP can be secured to a setuid environment so lets not get into a big war here. :D I just prefer to code everything in C. ;)

Looks like it, I can't reach it either. Try again in a few minutes, probably a smaller downtime.
ckpeter 07-20-2001, 10:46 PM anyone knows when webcp will likely be release? the panel looks good, but there are still lots of features incompleted.

But that's not a problem at all. See it that way: How many CP's can you find out there which are free???
Did you look around on their site? Did you see their sheduled features list? If all these features will be implemented and the panel is secure i think i will be one of the best Cp's out there!!! :stickout
iVersit 07-21-2001, 01:07 PM hey does anyone know if the people at can-host.com visit this board? They have a minor security issue with their control panel demo...

Felix used to spend a fair bit of time here too. So yes, they are about.
*note: I'm not even going to try to spell Felix's last name without it in front of me :)

you are missing my question. I am asking if anyone knows when it will be released. Besides, a free panel with a good feature list is no use if it never gets released.
Peter
(SH)Saeed 07-21-2001, 01:57 PM Well, to help finish the project, anyone that knows PHP/MySQL good enouch can contact them and offer to help since it's an opensource project.

I don't think i miss your question, or do i? :D
You can download it on their site. Ok there are features missing, but if you have a spare box around give it a try and tell us :D
ckpeter 07-22-2001, 01:27 PM Sorry, but you are still missing my question. :D
My question is, "when is the control panel likely to be release?"
I have checked out the demo and was impressed, and I have also checked out the feature list, that's why I am asking for a likely release date.
Downloading it and checking it out won't help me answer when it gets released. And I personally don't know PHP and MYSQL that well.
So, anyone knows (or knows PHP enough to guess based on the amount of work needs to be done) when it get released?
Thanks,
Peter
someone is running it on a raq?
Lah_Lah 08-01-2001, 11:18 PM I want to have a free control panel too, who have more resources and info about free control panel or low cost control.
bombino
Thanks for you job, I may pay you for the one time fee for your control panel, I am waiting for it.
if you put it as a one time fee control panel, and live updated, then you will be rich.
it is true, if I know how to code, I will do it.
iseletsk 08-02-2001, 07:39 AM This page has a good comparison chart of free & commercial control panels.
