View Full Version : A question on expired domains and on-hold domains

Hi!
I've been looking on two very cool  domains which seem to be on-hold by their registrars.
This is one of the two records:

Whois Server Version 1.3

Domain names in the .com, .net, and .org domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.

Domain Name: BIGSECRET
Registrar: SIGNATURE DOMAINS, INC.
Whois Server: whois.signaturedomains.com
Referral URL: http://www.signaturedomains.com
Name Server: No nameserver
Updated Date: 03-apr-2001

>>> Last update of whois database: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 01:56:11 EDT <<<

The Registry database contains ONLY .COM, .NET, .ORG, .EDU domains and
Registrars.

When you look up this domain at whois.signaturedomains.com you get:

Access to signaturedomains.com's WHOIS information is for informational
purposes only. Signaturedomains.com makes this information available
"as is," and does not guarantee its accuracy. The compilation, repackaging,
dissemination or other use of signaturedomains.com's WHOIS information in
its entirety, or a substantial portion thereof, is expressly prohibited
without the prior written consent of signaturedomains.com. By accessing
and using our WHOIS information, you agree to these terms.

No match found.

Register your domain name at http://www.signaturedomains.com/

What does that mean? The domain is on hold? Will it ever be released, even though it is really cool??? When? What should I do? Just wait? :bawling:
Please help, I'm very confused with this

Thanks in advance,

I posted a similar message a while ago in this forum. From my experience you best tactic is to be patient and check for the domain early every morning (around 6:30 AM EST). Just yesterday I was finally able to register a domain that I had been tracking for a long time. It expired in early May of 2001. I looked into services such as snapnames.com but decided not to pay for something I may not get. There is no set time on when a domain will be released though as I am also tracking another domain which expired on almost the same exact date but it is still not available.

In short, patience pays off.

I have been watching an early May expiring domain for over a month now. I happen to know(used a throwaway hotmail account) that his email is no longer valid. :dgrin:

I already own the .net, just waiting on the .com.

Life will be good.

:kaioken: <-- Me if someone snapname's it...

Hmmm, I'm new at this, how did you guys track all this information down? I have sort of an idea how I can look up this information, but by checking every morning, once you see it free do you automatically go to a random registrar and register the domain?

Would love to grab www.dcdomain.com or www.dc.com...

dc.com seems to have a nice page on it, so I doubt that the owner of the name will let that happen.

hehe Slade tell us what the doman is so we can be sure not to try for it. HAHAHAHA<--thats an evil laugh by the way.

Thank you

And I'm going to tell someone who ISN'T under NDA what domain I'm trying to snipe? ;)

It's a five letter .com of a real english word. I'll hold off for now on revealing it. Actually, if anyone was really interested in knowing, I'm sure they have already figured it out.

trend: If that domain was never used, you may be in luck, but don't hold your breath. It could be a really long wait.

You guys are dreaming.

I've been waiting for a domain name that has expired 2 years ago. It has been expired for 2 years now, and the registrar won't make it available.

:D

Aloha
also if it is a real word that is under 7 characters
chances are that some other country will have banks of computers doing seaches that try to get all english words in the dictionary on a constant basis
so ya might go to snapnames.com it would be worth the $50 or so to get it

but people do win the lottery

Different registrars release at different times. Network Solutions and Register.com hold on to them for a long time and then seem to release names in bulk. OpenSRS holds on to them for about 45 days after expiration and then releases them in a timely manner. NameZero keeps the domains and tries to sell them for at jacked up prices (minimum $50 and it shoots up from there based on "Appraised Value").

I waited from April 2000 until July 2001 for one domain I really wanted to be released only to have it grabbed by a domainscalper a few hours before I noticed it was available (which was just shortly after it was released). I waited from Sep 2000 until July 2001 for another domain with the same results.

The only legal thing on the internet worse than SPAM is a DOMAINSCALPER. Oh, and Al Gore.
