Jonathan K. 07-18-2001, 10:07 PM Hi, What you do is look at your average page and then multiply it by the number of visitors you expect to get, times that for the number of pages throughout your site and that's how much bandwidth you'll need. To calculate bandwidth for a single page, say it consisted of an index.html file that was 15K (0.15MB), a graphic named graphic1.gif that was 20K (.020MB), and a graphic named graphic2.gif that was 50K (.50MB), each time someone accessed that page of your web site, 15+20+50=85K (.85MB) would be transferred from your account across the Internet. If 10 people viewed that page, 10 x 0.85 MB = 8.5 mb, 8.5mb of bandwidth would be transferred from your account across the internet. If it was viewed by 100 people, it would be 85mb worth of bandwidth used. That's roughly how it is. Hope that helps :D benoire 07-18-2001, 10:15 PM hate to be picky, but you got your maths wrong a little there ;) you're out by a factor of 10 - the total size is 85k, yes, but this is 0.085MB not 0.85MB - the latter would be 850k. Therefore, total bandwidth for 10 visitors is 850k = 0.85MB its only academic at the end of the day though ;) the principals you stated still apply. Thanks for pointing out the mistake. :D creepcolony 07-18-2001, 10:21 PM always go with a plan with more bandwidth than you think you'll need! |
