i have zero income hehe. i got no job since i'm too young... (ya gotta be 16 or older to get a job here not unless u want some illegal job that involves standing at a corner) anyways if anyone replys to this topic. Ihoppoet can i jump on your little train too? (i'm gonna be your little ole shadow)
creepcolony 07-18-2001, 10:23 PM yah i'm under 16 too :bawling:
and i get no allowance
hard to pay for a site using ~20gig bandwidth
:bawling:
benoire 07-18-2001, 10:30 PM tell me about it , im a student too albeit older than 16, and there's so much to spend money on that webhosting really can't take priority. not only that but i'm looking to expand my web design business into web hosting soon tpp, so its all about finding every last penny !!
Ihoppoet 07-18-2001, 10:36 PM well Benore when your a big time web host, remember us poor students in way of cheap hosting ok?
thank you
Jason Miller:homer:
Relyc 07-18-2001, 11:11 PM I'm also under 16, albeit occasionally I can make the quick bit of cash, I have no steady job and would also like to find something along these lines.

Yup, don't leave us behind =)
MCHost-Marc 07-18-2001, 11:28 PM i understand that students can't afford to pay $20 per month for hosting. we are focusing on personal- and small-business sites; trying to keep the price down as much as possible ...but on the other side no webhost can offer 20gigs for $8 per month. :(
allera 07-19-2001, 07:57 AM Hey guys, I've got a little server sitting on a dsl line. Since my dsl provider would prolly nix my account if I charged for it (and they found out), I"ll offer it free. It truely is a small little server, but if you don't need a lot of space or a lot of bandwidth (creepcolony, email me as I _may_ be able to help you too), I can give ya space on it for free.
It's got nearly 100% uptime (my dsl is bridged and I haven't had it down for a _very_ long time (1 year?). The connection is stable, the server is stable, and I'll offer limited support to whoever needs it (If you say "this and this and this doesn't work," I'll fix it. If you say "Can you help me get this complex program running on your server" you won't be high on my priority list -- I have a real hosting business to run :)). My dsl also has a static IP, in case you were wondering.
You won't get the fancy dedicated IP, nor will you get fast CGIs, but you will get pretty quick transfer speeds. and PHP loads pretty snappy. And since I'm not really charged per-gig, I really don't care about offering it for free.
This applies to anyone who has already posted here asking for the same service. If you guys need the space, I'll put a new hard drive in it (one of these days).
It's a Red Hat 7.0 server (yea yea yea) that I've been testing things on, but I have quite a few actively serving sites on it and can add some more. If you are at all interested, email me at allera@focalhosting.com.
Being a poor college student myself (finally a senior!), and constantly being around people with no money, I can sympathize. Currently there are a few sites on the server from students (friends) that have no cash. :) They all love it.
Like I said, the server is not the best (it's going to be replaced soon anyway by a more powerful one), but the connection is fast and it's free to you guys.
Take it or leave it. :) All questions can be posted here or emailed to allera@focalhosting.com. Thanks.
nancy 07-19-2001, 01:08 PM Ooo. but will cgi scripts work properly atleast? since i might run a ikonboard that uses perl and cgi.but i might install a php board if the cgi scripts won't work. (if i ever do get a domain, since i gots no job)

Yes, CGIs will work just fine. I'll even update perl if I need to (shouldn't have to tho, it's running Red Hat 7.0).
benoire 07-19-2001, 02:15 PM hi, that sounds pretty cool. do you support ASP? im guessing no cos I doubt you'll have chilisoft, which is a shame cos thats wot i program in most, but i might still be interested in a bit of space
allera 07-19-2001, 02:30 PM Nope, sorry, I don't have $5k (or whatever the outrageous price is) for ChilliSoft. :( Also, no Java (way too memory and CPU intensive). Maybe when I upgrade the machine. :)
nancy 07-19-2001, 02:49 PM so we can't run javscripts on it? or u mean that other kind of java i have no clue of... *gets confused*
(edited)
i got another thing to ask. instead of asking u what we can and not do. can u list what we can put, like what the small server can handle (just so its kinda easier for all of us, instead of each of us asking)
Michael-MS 07-19-2001, 03:00 PM This doesn't fit the requirements of the original post, but seems to go along with the theme of "inexpensive web hosting".
We're currently in the process of offering an upgrade to our free hosting (non-virtual) customers and I don't see any problem with offering it to you guys as well.
Keep in mind that this is low space, low featured and not geared to high bandwidth sites.
$25 / year - No Setup Fee
We would only accept annual payments.
Features:
- Virtual Hosting (subdomain or domain)
- 15 MB space
- 2 GB Bandwidth
- 1 FTP / 1 POP3
- Web Mail Program
- Unlim. Email Aliases
- Shared SSL
- Access to Logs
- Webalizer Stats
FrontPage, ASP, CGI, PHP, or SSI would be extra fees. If you need a unique IP Address, there would be an additional $50 setup fee.
Please contact us for more information.
benoire 07-19-2001, 03:18 PM how much for ASP?
how much for additional bandwidth and POP3 mail boxes?
do you get SMTP with your email?
thanks

15 megs is a little for me. ikonboard itself takes 20 megs. not including my sites.

Javascript is fine since it doesn't run on the server -- it's client-based. By Java I mean chat rooms, JSP/Servlets, any Tomcat (or Tomcat-equivilent) support, etc. If you don't know what any of that is, don't worry about it. Javascript works fine.
The server supports the following: Apache 1.3.19 w/ standard modules (including mod_rewrite if I'm not mistaken), PHP, SSI, CGI, SSL, Perl, DNS Hosting (ability to use your own www.domain.com), SSH only, FTP, your own account, support for multiple email accounts, Javascript, .htaccess (password-protected dirs and custom error pages), and anything else that is pretty much standard on any virtual hosting plan from any host (I'm sure I missed something).
No ASP and no Java (Server-based Java, as explained above). I can't think of anything else the server really doesn't support. If you have a normal site with normal requirements, you'll be fine. If you have not-so-common needs like extra perl modules or apache modules, let me know. If you don't know, you probably don't need extra stuff (at least not yet). You'll also get all the bandwidth you need and decent amount of space. When I upgrade the hard drive (soon), you'll get all the space you need (no quota).
This is all 100% free, no catch. Well, one small catch: very limited support. I'll help you out as much as I can in my spare time, but don't expect 24/7 support. :)

ASP would bring the price up to $40 / year. If you are familiar with and can use a DSNLess connection then we can lower the price to $30 / year. Keep in mind that this is a Linux Server so you will have to convert any MS Access databases.
Bandwidth is at the rate of $4 / GB / month if you go over the alotted amount. We will give you a warning the first time and bill you for every occurrence there after. If you know how much more bandwidth you need now, I can probably offer you a discount since you're paying annually.
We can offer you a total of 10 users for +$5 / year. Should be more than enough. :) SMTP is included.

Ikonboard would most likely send you over the bandwidth limit as well. We have other hosting plans on our site that would meet your needs, but might be out of your price range. :(
nancy 07-19-2001, 03:44 PM Ooo. well i guess i might not be putting a ikonboard any time soon then:(
(edit)
hmm i guess i'm gonna purchase a domain name from you allera (focal host) since it's gonna be easier since i'm gonna go with ya. once i figure out to get some money..
Ihoppoet 07-19-2001, 04:26 PM I am looking at going with valuablehost.com They seem to have good deals, and they have a good rep on this board. The owner also seems to have a good rep, this by no means is an endorcment of any kind as I have not tried them yet, however I have a good feeling about them.
thank you
Jason Miller:homer:
p.s. I also had a good feeling about dellz, and look how that turned out lol

You can run your ikonboard just fine. :) As for money, just hit up your mom or dad for twelve bucks. Or hit each of them up individually for 6 bucks. :) That's what I used to do anyway. Just email me when you are ready.
PERL SCRIPTOR 07-19-2001, 04:58 PM Hey, I was just reading and noticed a lot of you are all really young. Well I am too I guess, I'm 18. Either way a lot of you said that you had little or no income to fund your sites or anything. I'll let you in on a little hint,
I'm in Canada but I think it's almost the same in the States. Anyhow, I'm in the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets. It's a great source of money for youth since I am currently working the summer with them now. I'm out of province in Newfoundland at H.M.C.S. Avalon teaching 12-18 year olds Information Technology for 7 weeks. It pays great, I'll make about $3200, plus I get free room and board, so I'll be able to buy all the routers and stuff I want.
Anyhow, sorry if this is off topic but this is how I make all my money to afford hosting.

AOL charged by the minute, and I had to walk to school, up hill both ways in the snow, with no shoes, and by god we liked it! ya bunch of spoild kids. lol
anyway between rent, school, books, insurance, living, and making my films, I'm normaly a bit more than strapped.
Thank You

I have P4 computer and T1 connection. I would like to setup a server like you have. I also want to help students, cause I am a junior college student. But I don't know how to set up a server. I do have red hat, but it is kind of complicated to set up one right?
Hopefully that you can help me to set up one allera

Sure thing. I would recommend FreeBSD as it's easier for me to help you with that, but I could do a Red Hat installation. Email me and I'll help ya through it.

benoire 07-19-2001, 11:21 PM hi allera, i pmed you, if you could get back to me at some point, that'd be great.
i've decided to learn php, and started going through it tonight, configuring my machine to execute php scripts, and learning the basics etc, so i am now even more interested in the space you have to offer. to be honest, while i've been meaning to start learning it for a while, it was your offer that finally prompted me to get down and see to it!
cheers
