View Full Version : Fatigue?
dbbrock1 06-22-2003, 03:03 AM This is going to be a pretty wierd and strange thread.
When I wake up and don't have enough sleep, I feel like complete crap (Normal I know). Now about a year and a half ago, I would eventually wake up an hour later. But ever since then, throughout the day I just get more tired. What it feels like is my eyes and the skin around it burn like all heck. Also, it gets very hard to think clearly and it gets very hard to focus on visual "things". I wouldn't be giving it much of a big deal if it has happened all my life, but this just popped up one day. I don't know if everyone else is like this, or if I just have some sort of problem, but if you have the same problem, please share.

I don't get stressed out easily. I don't think anything has really changed since the day it started.

Seriously, I do all that. Pretty strange huh?
akashik 06-22-2003, 08:31 AM Have you had your eye's checked lately? Maybe focusing all day at a single point is affecting your vision.
- could be a brain tumor too I suppose ;)

Well, that should keep him awake.
Sticks 06-22-2003, 10:59 AM I absolutely agree with akashik !
Brain Tumor :)

Just my luck! Time to see the doctor :liplick:
JustinH 06-22-2003, 01:29 PM I'm in the same boat, but it was due to me quitting a nice little stimulant (smoking). I'll tell you, if you quit anything with large amounts of caffeine or nicotine, there's your answer :).

I got the same thing when I quit drinking 3L of coke each day (now it's more like 1x 375ml can a week)
I'm not so bad now, but there were a few days where I literally fell asleep at my desk :D

Nymix-CB 06-22-2003, 10:26 PM This damn business is soooooo stressing! For example, today I went all the day to go for a ride at a Six Flags park. All the day I thought about going back at home and seeing my servers down etc...
So mentally stressing!
okihost 06-22-2003, 10:38 PM I get fatigue as the days goes on and usually by 6:00am I start feeling tired and about two months ago they found out I have an inactive thyroid and put me on a Thyroid supliment<sp?>. They say it is going to take about 6 months to work, so I will let you know in about 4 more :). I have grown pretty used to it, but it would be nice to not get tired all the time in the evening.
Also note is is not from be being lazy as I workout 2-3 times a week and walk 2 miles daily with my wife so its not from sitting around all day which could also be the problem, but you could always ask the to check you and see if its possible you have underactive metabolism which is what I have.
The burning thing I really have no clue what that could be, have you spoken to any doctors about this yet?
PhilG 06-22-2003, 11:21 PM I feel the same as dbbrock1...
I believe it’s from sitting at a computer for too long. You will have sore eyes from staring at the monitor for long periods without a break.
And I think you may be tired mentally and not physically but it could also be a vitamin deficiency (lack of sun?).
I am no Doc though :-)

But this is every single day I do not get enough sleep. I need 11 or more hours of sleep for this to not happen.
Acroplex 06-22-2003, 11:44 PM Haven't slept more than 5 hours on a week-day for the past 10 years. No problems. Of course I crash on the weekends :D
peddler 06-22-2003, 11:50 PM Not tring to scare you, but something similar happened to a good friend (25 years old). He complained of chronic fatigue and dismissed it by thinking it was the stress of the business, long hours at a computer, marriage, kids, etc. He ended up having a slight stroke that, according to his Dr, was avoidable.
If you feel crappy enough to post about it, my best suggestion would be to get a complete checkup soon.
Good luck.
alapo 06-23-2003, 04:11 AM Check your monitors refresh rate.

Would that seriously cause this? Even when I haven't touched my computer all day it will still happen.
PhilG 06-23-2003, 05:03 AM A low refresh rate of 65 and below will give you sore eyes... Have it as high as you can! 75 is good but 100 is better.
How many hours a day do you spend on a computer dbbrock1?
akashik 06-23-2003, 12:00 PM Actually I about to suggest your refresh rate too. Given what you've said it's probably not a cause but anything under 75hz at 17 inches is going to mess with your head. You might want to check your video card is running at the same speed as your monitor. I reinstalled XP a while back and they were out of synch. Spent about an hour feeling nasty till I checked that :)
A trip to the doctor might be a good idea.

I was running at 60Mhz on a 17 inch. It didn't fix my problem, but it sure looks better :)

Owww!...That might actually be your problem. At 60Hz (unless you have very insensitive eyes and don't notice the flicker) on a regular monitor (rather than a flat panel tft type where the display doesn't need to be updated so often) its probably likely to cause tiredness, headaches and sore eyes and possibly a range of other symptoms particularly if you're using it at a fairly high resolution.
I read somewhere a couple of months ago some research that suggested prolonged use of monitors in certain conditions could cause disturbances in sleep patterns, insomnia, lethargy and even depression.
I did a quick google search and couldn't find the same article for you, but http://www.newvisionsmagazine.com/July2002/hicks0702.html seemed to contain references to the studies and pretty much describes exactly your symptoms, along with some hints for relieving them.
If your monitor refresh rate doesn't help after a couple of days, you could try reducing the resolution a little, or try a bigger monitor for a few days and see if that helps.
The other thing is to make sure that your screen is clean and free from reflections.
If not then it might be a good idea to take a trip to the doctors for a checkup as people suggest just incase.
Hope you feel better soon.
APEXware 06-23-2003, 03:03 PM Err...where can I check and change this in XP?
EthicalEpi 06-23-2003, 03:14 PM Not sure about XP, but it's probably in the same place as Win2K.
Right click your desktop, then go to the 'settings tab'. I'd guess there will be an 'advanced' button (or something like that), which will open up a new window. Click the 'monitor' tab in that then under refresh rate (drop down) select the highest rate that your monitor will handle (if you have an old monitor click the 'show only refresh rates that the monitor can use' so you don't break your monitor by setting it at a higher refresh rate than the monitor is designed for - most modern monitors will have built in protection against this and will give you a blank screen with a message if its set too high - just hit escape and it will revert back to the previous setting).
You should always use the highest refresh rate that your monitor and video card can use as it will produce the most stable display (if you don't have a plug and play monitor or a specific driver installed for your monitor you will be able to find the maximum refresh rates at each resolution in your monitor manual).
You should never set the refresh rate higher than your monitor is designed to work with (even if it allows you to do this) because you will damage your monitor in the long run.
Not sure if this is exactly the same for XP, but you should find it somewhere in the 'settings' tab. If not a google search for 'windows xp monitor refresh rate' should give you all the instructions you need.
APEXware 06-23-2003, 03:16 PM Well hell no wonder my eyes hurt, I'm on 60hz too.. And duhh..I knew that was where it should be but missed it when I just looked, thanks.
EthicalEpi 06-23-2003, 03:27 PM Yeah, for some reason windows 2000 always seems to default to the lowest refresh rate available rather than the highest when you change resolution (on my machine it does anyway).
Its quite easy to get used to 60hz and not notice after a while, but if you change between the refresh rates you'll notice the difference right away unless you're insensitive to it.
If you change the resolution, its worth going into the monitor settings and checking that its doesn't revert back to a lower setting automatically just incase you don't notice.
(wonder how many people microsoft have driven mad/blind with that - unless its just my monitor driver or something)
Hope your eyes feel better too anyway.
APEXware 06-23-2003, 03:33 PM Changed mine to 85hz(best this monitor can handle) and the screen just looks a little darker.
Nymix-CB 06-23-2003, 06:35 PM I got the best duo, contact lenses + 60hz refresh rate :D
