View Full Version : Co-Location & Server lease
mattschinkel 06-21-2003, 10:13 AM Hello...
Most important question:
Do you know of any any good (cheap) leasing companies?
can be anywhere in the states, or Toronto.
and...
Where should I colo?
I was honestly looking at FDC for colo, but.... If they ever go out of business, I loose my servers? can I get insurance on my servers? I don't trust them, and don't think I'll be using them, but it is an option. what do you think?
any other recommendations for colo?
I live in Toronto, colo is very expensive here, so I think I'll be doing it in the states. NY may be nice.
thanks.
wateringcan 06-21-2003, 10:38 AM What do you mean by server lease? Are you looking to rent a dedicated server, or lease hardware from a hardware vendor? If the latter, your best bet is to probably go with a large company such as Dell, Compaq, etc. I know an Ontario based company called FeaturedServers (http://featuredservers.com) is planning on doing leasing, but the option (according to their site) will not be available until Q4 of 2003.
Hope this helps.
mattschinkel 06-21-2003, 10:52 AM yes... I would like to lease hardware from a hardware vendor, and colocate it.
I will need to lease fairly soon.
Dell are bit expensive arn't they?
Where else can I go?
wateringcan 06-21-2003, 10:59 AM Have you considered purchasing a used system off Ebay? Other than the major players, I'm not too sure who else will lease 1U machines.
Team Global 06-21-2003, 11:14 AM im in toronto too. things are quite expensive here..
its more cheap dowe States, and the Canadian goes up.. good for us... hehe..
Ebay is fine, just find a fiair dealer.
wateringcan 06-21-2003, 11:21 AM I agree that things are much more expensive here (I'm in Toronto as well), but you'd be surprised of the bargains you can find on Ebay. I recently bought a new 1U chassis from a company off Ebay and it only cost around $45 USD w/ another $20 or so for shipping. Can't beat that! You just have to keep your eyes open.
Also, with the CAD doing so well right now, it might make sense to order from the US. Although, be careful about shipping (especially UPS), as they'll really get you on the item when it comes through the border (brokerage fee + tax).

Not a bad deal at all. Did you happen to get a power supply w/ it?
Colomachines.com. They are good enough if you don't need brand names like DEll. IF you want dell, 600SC is currently the budget one to look at. You should look elsewhere rather than FDC for colocation. Use the "Search" button on the top menu bar, you would get everything you need.
wateringcan 06-21-2003, 08:38 PM Nah, unfortunately I didn't get a PSU with that. :)

BrianKerr 06-21-2003, 08:39 PM 600SC from dell is a tower server, not a 1U, but yeah its a really nice bargain for what you get!

mattschinkel 06-21-2003, 11:28 PM Nobody knows of any other leasing companies?
AKavanaugh 06-21-2003, 11:31 PM Hey, was just gonna put a note that Colo in Toronto isn't that bad from PriorityColo, just thought I'd point that out.
