I am thinking of using phpBB for a client project (its Free:D )

Has anyone had any problems with this script - any pointers or tips would be appreciated.

The installation is a breeze. I haven't worked with any other bb scripts much, but phpBB seems pretty good.
I don't know how well it performs under a heavy load, but this is one of the largest phpBBs that I have seen (I have nothing to do with this site, but the admins there might have some thoughts on running phpBB for a larger board):

Well I'm the administrator of the Pearl Harbor film mentioned above :D No problems with phpBB and that board is running an old version. The 1.4 version is a lot faster.

Contact me if you need more details

I've never used phpBB, but Ikonboard has to be just as easy, if not easier to install. And it's alot easier to cistomize. The beta of the MySQL version should be out within 2 weeks.

Hi,
We use phpBB for several forums and have found it to be a great program, especially considering the price :)

Setup is real easy and the board flies when installed on a decent server.
I have also heard good things about XMB and I would recommend that one too.

I admin both a phpBB and a vBulletin board. Though I like vBulletin slightly more, they are close. phpBB is a great board.

If you are dealing with support issues where responding to a new thread quickly is important, then go with vBulletin. It allows mods to receive an Email when a NEW thread is created. I like that feature and phpBB doesn't have it. Maybe I'll put in a request to phpBB. They are pretty good about adding stuff....

And version 2.0 of phpBB is already looking very very good.

Check out two boards running the alpha code.

Pretty nice eh? Totally templated and *free* of course.

There is no release date set, but they've been hinting that it may go to beta in the near future...

Hello

I run 2 phpBBs. It is very quick, reliable and most important FREE!!.

They have answered my support questions in 24-48 in their support forums.

By the way what new features this version 2.0 has?
Great ! Whom I may ask for a preview version ?

Regards,
Mac

It's open source :D You don't have to ask anyone for a preview version. Just go to the phpBB site on Source Forge (http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/phpbb/) and you can always download the latest development code from CVS.

Just remember it's developent code and at any given instance, something will not work.
