Hi,
I signed up with freeservers.com a couple of weeks ago, and their server has been very unreliable. Right now its down and has been down for at least 24 hours. Freeservers is a big host, and I had hoped for a good service.
I would like to ask a couple of questions:

1.
My site, http://myeve.org, has a little file, eve.zip, but people cannot download it by a right-button mouse click. They have to press the left button. I was very surprised at this restriction, and asked Freeservers technical support three times about it, but they refused to answer the question. I have never ever heard of such a restriction before -- anyone else experienced it on other hosts?

2.
Freeservers rejects download requests from major shareware/freeware link sites. Freeservers technical support informed me that "download managers" won't work -- how common is this on other hosts?

3.
Is the current trouble with their server downtime a short-term problem? Has anyone got previous experience with Freeservers?

One thing, they're cheap -- I paid for 1 year at $4.99 per month.

Regards,

I think I can explain the download manager part. This is just a guess though. Lets say someone uploaded 20 files of a program, ziped up and everything. Then instead of waiting there and making sure everyone downloads, they queue them in the download manager. So to stop that they would disable them. And a reason for for the right click. This is just a half guess. Someone people when uploaded pirated software rename it to .jpg or some common name. Now if you right click on a link to a a file with the extension .jpg, it will show up on your screen, it wont download. To get around this you would right click and do save as. Yet this is disabled so that causes a problem :)

One extra note:
If the fancy takes you to look at my site, at
http://myeve.org, and you experiment with left and right button clicks on eve.zip, I have actually moved the file elsewhere because of the problems with Freeservers, so there is an underlying link that will take you to it. eve.zip is still on the site though: if you were to type in the URL in your browser:
http://myeve.org/eve.zip
Freeservers will reject your request.
Well, it would, except it's still down.

bkauler, I have no problem connecting to your website. Although, it does not let me download the file since the click is not coming from your own website.

You do not have permission to access http://myeve.org/eve.zip
Data files must be stored on the same site they are linked from.

Thank you for using FreeServers

Hmmm,
I just tried again, both
www.freeservers.com
and
www.myeve.org
My browser gets as far as
"Connecting to site: 208.185.127.162"
then times out waiting.

It's been that way at least 24 hours. How is it possible for you to get thru but not me?

Well, we obviously take different paths to reach them and there must be a problem for you somewhere along the way. Try open MS-DOS prompt and type: tracert www.myeve.org

Then go to www.traceroute.org and try some of tracerouting from some different sites and see if they can reach your server. Just keep in mind that just because you can't reach a certain site, it does not mean that the site has problems.
