View Full Version : Ispell/Aspell Installation from RPMs

Hi... I posted this to the Cobalt mailing list but I thought I'd post this here too to see if anyone can contribute any info (maybe Jens?).

I started off trying to compile Aspell to work with the spell checker plug in for SquirrelMail. After struggling with it for a day or so with no luck (someone suggested I needed to recompile PHP?), I looked into Ispell. I downloaded it from GNU, and had even less luck with it than I did with Aspell. I searched the Cobalt mailing list archives and found a mention of an Ispell RPM but for the MIPS RaQ 2; I did a Google search and finally found something I decided to try:
http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/contrib/libc6/i386////ispell-3.1.20-30.1.rh6.2.i386.html
I ran it on a RaQ 3 and low and behold it worked! It integrated perfectly with the SquirrelMail spell checker.

Here's my first question: The RaQ 3 I installed it on is sort of a test bed for me to play with; because of the fact that the machine doesn't get much use, it's hard for me to tell if there were any "side effects" from installing the wrong thing. I now want to install the above rpm on a RaQ 4r that I have several dozen clients hosted on. The above version appears to be for Red Hat 6.2. I found a ton of rpms for Ispell at:
http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=ispell
Would any of the above be a more appropriate choice?

Second question: I've read that Aspell is "better" than Ispell. At the same site I found these rpms for Aspell:
http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=aspell
The ones that are specific to Red Hat are for version 7.1. Are there any on this page that would be appropriate for a RaQ 4r?

Thanks in advance for any help.
