Hello
I'm considering buying a Dell PowerApp.web 120 for a start-up shared hosting project. I'm looking to offer many features including ASP, PHP, and JSP which happen to be more processor intensize then static page requests therefor I'm going to go with a dual processer solution([2] Pentium III 1Ghz). I plan to purchace (3) 36 GB SCSI hard drives as well. What my questions are is first how many accounts do you think I can squese out of this server (dealing with 50MB, 100MB, 300MB, 500MB accounts) taking into consideration processor load and second how much memory do you think I should purchase for this server in relation to my goal of filling it as much as possible (max mem capasity is 8GB)? I look forward to your opinions. Thanks!

Aloha
I am going to be loooking at the same box
I have a dell app 100 now
but want to do some asp hosting etc...
I was going to get this
http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.asp?imodule=CT64M72S4R75
if you do go to ebates first and get an account ya get 5% form crucial helps pay shipping
this would give ya 2 gigs for $600 not to bad otherwise a 1 gig stick is about $600
I figured this would be plenty without sinking to much into the server and shold last the life of the server.
3 36 gig ya going to run raid level 5 or ???
also curious where ya goin to colocate the box ???
I might get on from efreeservers and send em all the stuff they charge a $100 to open it so was going to send em a extra pIII chip and the memory and HD
so any other plans also what were you planning on doing for;
pop server ?????
Database ??
back up ???
Hello Honu
Yes I was planning on runing RAID level 5. As far as coloction, I was considering efreeservers as well but am still looking around. Do you have any past experience with them? As far as POP, Database and back-up I'm still thinking about that as well you have any recomendations?

not sure yet what I am going to do for a mail server ????
I have a few to check out but might end up trying to set up a second unix box for mail and to handle a MySQL db also on it and a mail list ??
might be cheaper and more diverse to do this ???
but not really sure
I am thinking I want to do some sql 1000 stuff in the near future so might try to see about a nfr copy or somethign
back up I asked efreeservers about they are outsourcing it maybe ?? so have to find out more about it
so many things to think about with a win2k box
but asp has its good side adn want to do some stuff with the new sharepoint services

The Dell PowerApp120 doesn't support 1Gig sticks. You will have to purchase 4x 512 megs. :(
Aloha
yeah do not think I would bother with that much in this box anyway why pay twice as much.
hmmm a dell person said they would as they base it on there 1550 which handles it ?
could be true though they have mixed up stuff before ?
might have to find out for sure
was looking at a 1550 though with 4 gigs for a sql server ???
so hmmmm
this is where I also read that they do ??

(The system will support 4GB of RAM when 1GB DIMMs are available.)
but no worries was only going to stick 512 sticks in it anyway
but thanks for the point out ;)
will try to find out the real scoop soon
