my current host has not been up as much as they claimed they would be. there are so many hosts out there that look great and have what i need but what i really care about is uptime, and reasonably fast speed, but mainly uptime. things like customer support is not really important because i only want support when my site goes down. i'm curious if anyone can mention hosts that they have not had much downtime if any? (preferably firsthand) i'm looking for a standard average account, 200-500megs, 10-20 gigs per month. $10 - 20 per month.

take a look at www.aletiahosting.com They had troubles with uptime, but have moved to the NAC.net NOC and have had great uptime except for a few hours but that was b/c a site was using too many resources. Their support is great and they are usually almost always on AIM and can be reached if their is a problem and respond promptly (sp?). If you would like to track one of their domains, send me a pm and/or email and I'll give you one, or just track www.aletiahosting.com which is on the same machine as me (I think....)

My jury is hung on Aletia's downtime. But here's another question: for $9.95 per month, 200 MB and 10 gigs, what kind of downtime should one expect?

They actually have had a great uptime since their move to the NAC.net NOC. They actually do a great job and most of the people, like me, don't use the full amount. It is just a game of averages and they are doing good, along w/ the good uptime.

Considering most decent internet connections are quite reliable, and servers when ran correctly are quite reliable, all sites should be up at least 99.5%.. this gives the host a few hours each month for reboots/disk scans/hardware problems, and should be considered acceptable unless you are looking at an enterprise hosting solution which would run you much more than $10/month. I dont think you will have a problem with excessive downtime with any of the hosts recommended around here, including aletia, as this WHT group is a fairly discriminating bunch :)
