Hi and thanks for such a super board !!!
I have spent hours just reading post/replies & think I have found my new home away from home for awhile.
I am looking to start-up my own board while I help run another where I have many benifits including admin title but no admin functions... hmnmmnmn I simply do not like the tactics taken by the board I'm on now including treatment of our clients... Thus my new undertaking...
What I need to know is what can I do to start my own board besides the obvious meaning I am very very new and PHP simply drives me nuts at this point. I'm looking for a server which has unlimmited bandwidth and the tools available online for me to work without using downloads which to me means minimul support as I must now go to who wrote the script and ask many questions which I feel should be answered from within my account...
I love VBulletin very much and it looks easy enough to install. My probelm is I'd like to have all the tools I need on my server and not look eslewhere after I sign on.
Am I making sence ?? hehehee
I have an account with GlobalHosting for now but their support is very bad... I have yet to rec'v an answer from any emails I have sent!!! NOT ONE hmnmnmn
THANKS IN ADVANCE :D

vBulletin (not free) and phpBB (free) are both PHP bulletin boards and are both extremely easy to install. All you have to do is upload the package to your host and install it. If you can't do that, I'm sure your host can do it for you.

The only tools you'd really need on the server is PHP4 and mySQL support. Other than that, you should be fine.

These are the steps you may want to follow:

1) Download the board package from the site (www.vbulletin.com or www.phpbb.com).
2) If you don't have telnet: extract the package to your computer and upload the individual files to your host. If you do have telnet: upload the package to your host and extract it on the server. The host should be able to help you with this.
3) Point your browser to the config URL (listed in the installation guides).
4) Configure your BB. Add users, categories, forums, etc.
5) Test it all out by logging in, logging out, posting messages, etc.
6) Have a coke.

If you know what you are doing, support from the host shouldn't be needed. If you are new at this (which is seems like you are new to BB's, but I'm not sure about how new you are to telnet and things like that), you should find a host that will give you good support.

Reply back if you need further clarification. Good luck! :)

Hello allera...
THANK YOU...
I may need to call my server and have a live talk and see what to do next... I also have downloaded and installed the free version of VB to see if I can do it and go from there. I am now on my way to look at www.phpbb.com and your website ;)
A little support can go along way... What I have planned can grow huge and my resources will be more available in another month to help finance this adventure... I have done enough of the legwork for the board I'm at now to run my own and in a year should be doing very well....

THANKS again and I'll comeback if I still need some advice or a helping hand...

There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth, trust me.
Do a search on this board about "unlimited" and "bandwidth".

I second that. Stay away from unlimited unless you TRUELY know what you are getting yourself into. I would not host a potentially-popular site with an unlimited host just because of future downtime possibilities. Pay the extra dough and be assured quality. :)

I checked and the server I have now offers 6000 MB per month on the plan I now have...
I will try to start small and grow as I can afford more bandwidth and I know I will and may even search for another provider when the time comes as I now pay a monthly fee testing what both I and the server can do at this time... GOOD IDEA?

Still waiting for my domain name tranfer from network solutions to the new server... Changed the server DNS late friday EST so I'm hoping its completed today...
THANKS !!!

Good idea. :) Keep us posted on how your site does (and maybe even a link to it?).

Ohhh... Like I stated earlier I will be trying to run this new board/website while I work the other and don't want to let the cat out of the bag yet :D
I'll need the income from one to run the other but be assured I will post an update when all is ready or even just a link to let you take a look at what I'm doing...
My major worry is can I afford to do this even with the help of another who wants to come aboard because he too does not like the treatment some of our clients have rec'vd...
THANKS AGAIN !!!

I will and may even search for another provider GOOD IDEA?

tera-byte offers you a real good deal of 20 Gb at $9 per month - also valuablehost 6 Gb at $ 5 - also westhost ( unlimited html not others - thats good)- also dellz ( though there was some complain re something about them recently)

wzpro is also good ( best price to what-you-get ratio in the market)- but aol users will be blocked out and a ???frequent( but small)downtime till they change the noc

If you go for a little higher budget - dezines.com ( a good host not discussed here) - qwk - xensei - site5
