Looking for general advice on how to build traffic to a site. If I do a search, I come up with tons of outfits that charge to do so. I would like to learn about it myself. Anyone with good links, etc. to do so, I sure appreciate it.
Thanks very much.

www.searchenginewatch.com - the key is to build search engine friendly pages and then the traffic will start coming from itself (if done correctly :) )

Submit to DMOZ(www.dmoz.org)!!! And google. Those will get ya a whole bunch if combined, and since a lot of other search engines use Googles results (like Yahoo)...

The googlebot went to my site and it's still not listed :(

yea as kneuf mentioned, submitting your site to dmoz is of paramount importance, as google retrieves its results from there.

If it's the site listed in your profile, it is in google. Search using the '.com' part as well.

The problem (well, after 2 weeks, it's too early for this to be a 'problem') is that you're competing with some computer hardware with the same name as your site. Also note that google may have trouble spidering those complex multi-parameter phpNuke urls, and that it's not too clear what your site is for from the front page.

Nice theme for phpNuke though...

This is due to the fact that the other three web sites have put more weigt on the keyword "lavaport".

The first web site has lavaport in a link which in addition contains the word lava.

The second web site has lavaport in a header tag ( <hn>...</hn> where 'n' is a number from 1 to 6 ).

The third web site has the word "lavaport" bold and in color so one can distinguish it between the other text.

I have some suggestions for you:
1.) You have way to many meta-tags, you merely need the keyword, description and author meta tag, that's it.
2.) You use a lot of javascript on your website which takes up space in the html code, so I highly recommend you put the javascript in a *.js file and include it.

Hope this helps and clears some thigns up :stickout: ;) :D

Hey,

Search some information out regarding Google ranking - you'll find that a big (the biggest?) determining factor is other sites linking to you.

Start calling in favours...:D

I foudn the point system

Inbound link text: 10 points.
title: 10 points
domain name: 7 points
large h1-h2 headings: 5 points
first sentence of first paragraph 5 points
path or filename: 4 points
proximity (multi kws): 4
beginning of a sentence 1.5 points
bold or italic text: 1 points
usage in text: 1 point
title attribute: 1 point
alt tag: .5 point
meta descrip: .5 points
meta keywords: .05 point

what are Inbound link text?

*L*

I hope you didn't pay someone for that.:) That list might be a decent guess, but Google is notoriously guarded about revealing their ranking system.

Inbound text links are links to your site - by the wording, I'd say text hyperlinks and not linked images.

Best advice:

1. Make pages that are useful to visitors
2. Get people to link to you if you can.
3. Wait:D

4. Don't make a link that your visitors can't see, like between tables etc... It's considered SPAM. Basically, the exact same content which your visitors can see, should be seen by the search engines

What are you talking about man, I just build one site for some Indian buddy in Chicago using PHP-Nuke 6.0 about 2 weeks ago and its already indexed in Google in top 20 links.

Here is the website link:
http://www.chicagobase.com

Key words you should try:
Chicago Desi
Desi Movies
Desi Events

To those who don't know what Desi means, its a general word for people from South East Asia or Indians, Pakistanies and closer countries.

One more thing that I think is important:
How many other sites link to you that are already indexed in Google.

If you need help, I will add your site's link just to get it started.

Looks like you've modified the usual PHPNuke urls though - Google seems to follow links with a single parameter (www.site.com/index.php?parameter=this) but dislike the multi-parameter links (www.site.com/index.php?parameters=this&that=theother).

It probably helps too thatyou're in a relatively non-competitive category - I mean it's geographically specific, and then specific to a smaller niche. Also, it's not unusual for new sites to appear and disappear in the google index. Your site has exactly one other site linking to it, and two pages in the google index. You'll need more links and indexable content to keep it high in the index.

Site looks pretty cool by the way - PhpNuke themes are getting quite good.

Theme was made by me, Actually, Googlebot is not following my tweaks using ReWrite mod, All I did was asked few sites that are already in Google and then start posting my site's link in different forums (It wasn't a spam)
2nd main thing I used was add all the keywords at the bottom on my site (if you press Ctrl+A and then scroll at the bottom, you will see what I am talking about) and that's it.
Porky buddy, offer is still on, if you want, I will add a text link to your site and knowing Googlebot's nature, he will follow that link.
Wish you goodluck.

Googles index update seems to have finished a few days ago.

Usually getting in Google takes a LOT of patience, even with backlinks etc.. anywhere between 1 to 3 months before you get indexed.

A few tips to getting your site in google and ranking well:

Get the google toolbar, and watch for pagerank. Pagerank is one of the top determining factors in how high in a search result you get listed. When someone with a high pagerank links to your site, you get a *share* of their page rank. If lots of people with high pageranks link to you, then your pagerank also goes up. If you have a page rank, then google has indexed you.

Submit your site to DMOZ, Yahoo, and Google's add url page. Also make sure to submit a few pages of your site to google, dont spam it, but submit at least 3 or so different pages.

Use the same URL when requesting link backs, or s.e submissions. So if your site is usually http://www.site.com, dont request link backs, or submit your site as http://site.com

Google sees these 2 URL's as different.

Once you've gotten a few links from other sites already in google, you should link to yourself using keywords (eg. if you sell green widgets, and you have a contact page, link to the contact page using something like: "Find out more about our green Widgets" and use your title wisely for keywords.

Also, when linking to yourself (eg your HOME nav button), a common mistake people always make, dont link to "index.php" or "index.html" link to either your URL, or just "/". Once again, google sees: www.site.com and www.site.com/index.html as 2 different URL's. You want as many links as possibly pointing to the same URL.

If you have a forum, put a bot on it ;)
